piece of metal fell into fuel tank..

F*&$... Id like answers, but feel free to just come in and ridicule me.. I deserve it..


So I did the rear diff mod.. went smoothly until i got to running the tube up to the gas cap..

I took the cap off to make more room.. i couldn't squeeze the hose through the hole and my arm wasn't long enough.. so i attached one of those little magnetic screw picker upper thing that extends.. to the hose so i had a solid object to push through the hole... anyway worked it through the rubber grommet around the fuel neck where you fill up.. and the piece of shit broke.. and a little piece of brass fell into the tank! unbelievable..

whatever can and can not really conceivably happen will happen.. especially when a storm is coming in and you work in a parking lot.. lol..

ok so whats my play here.. its brass.. not metal.. its the size of about a pinky finger nail..

how big of a deal is it?????

does it sink to the bottom of the tank.. does the filter block it anyways..

or is it a huge deal that i need to drop the tank and fish it out, can you just yank the filler neck at some point before the tank?

Shouldn't cause much in the way of problems I would imagine. It'll probably get stuck near a baffle or just float around. The sock filter is big enough that it wouldn't block it off.

thats was my thoughts.. good news is it doesn't float, I checked..

so i figured it would sink to the bottom.. and the filter on the fuel pump would stop it from getting into any lines and blocking them..


my only thought was to remove the fuel neck, and maybe find it in the tube.. idk how feasible that is..




realizing I'm an idiot all together, i should of just feed the line down from there first..

If it makes you feel any better, my sister had a ex-boyfriend take off with her key to her gas cap. We broke the top off and the rest fell into the tank. She drove it for another 3 years with no problems.

Although, if you start getting any stuttering or hesitation, don't plan on driving much further.

b/c of the corrosive nature of the fuel and brass being a soft metal. Otherwise the screen on the fuel pickup should block it..:violin:

I just replaced my fuel pump. There is no way that is going to cause problems knowing what I know now.

I just finished replacing numerous sensors and such on my runner. I have 200k+ miles. I pretty much did it for the hell of it and most were due.

The one thing that made the biggest difference in fuel mileage were the fuel injectors. Keep in mind I run BG 44k periodically. One injector was a lost cause and most of the seals were hardened and cracked. Wow, what a difference. Injector cleaner is not a fix all for old.
