Piecing together my lift...

okay so there's a guy selling this on craiglist:


Coilover shocks toyota 4runner bilstein 2-3 inch. Made by Downey offroad. used 300$
OME rear shocks N86 used 60$
springs for rear from land cruiser 60$

i've done some research and i think this would be a pretty legit setup... what do you guys think?

Is there anything else i should get before lifting it?
Are these okay prices?

for shocks get new LC shocks, its only 30 bucks more and you get way better ride and flex, check to see how many coils are the LC springs, 300 for the front setup is pretty $$$$$ i would rather buy new. billi 5100s adjustable are 200 new 100 used, front coils you can go with OME(kinda stiff may sag over time) or Eibach 650lb coil both are about 150 ish. someother things to get is diff drop spacers and pandhard bar drop extension.
 
This sounds like a bunch of stuff that I have been seeing on the Denver Craigslist for a few months now.
 
i like hearing good reviews of local ma & pa places. thanks for that. they post stuff about parting a bunch of tacos and runners too... i'll be sure to keep that in mind.

anyone else got 2 cents about the lift?
 
I would say pass on everything. There is a reason it has been on Craigslist for a few months now and not sold. The front coilovers are probably very used and way over priced. Same goes for the rear stuff, probably very used and no reason to buy them. Do a little more research and searching for items that aren't just shy of being throw away. This will save you the trouble of having to do it twice.

Id just spend the little bit more cash to get new stuff and piece of mind, unless you dont wanna spend that much or cant, id try it. Thats all you can do really.
 
it does have a lot to do with the money... thats why i was looking on craigslist... i think we all rather have shiny new lifts rather than used... but in these hard times, if you can do it cheaper, why not?

And for the rear, buy those LC coils and pick up some new LC shocks.

I understand you wanting to save money. But when it comes to lifts, you will end up saving money if you just do it right the first time.

because springs and shocks are wear item, and I really doubt you or the seller has a shock dyno to really check the shocks out to see just how worn they are. I'm not saying I've never picked up used suspension components before, but the price has to be right (cheap) to make it worth while.
 
thanks guys. 350 isn't all that bad for the front set up. i was thinking of ditching the CL guy anyway... do i need anything else? diff drop?
 
You can find better and cheaper... I payed half that for my setup.. If it were me, the only thing I'd be interested in would be the LC springs for the rear. You can get new stock LC shocks for the rear relatively cheap. Then look for some used taco or tundra springs for the front. Couple that with some bilstein shocks for the front and you'll have a nice lift. Also like others have said, your going to need a dif drop and a panhard bracket. What size tires are you thinking of using? 33's your going to need a body lift also..

I guess when you think of it that way $350 isn't that bad for a front setup if the front setup is still usable. $350 is way to much for a front setup if it is shot! I assembled my front using Tundra TRD springs and shocks w/ 45K on them ($100) and top plate spacers ($60), $160 for the front. Assembled my rear using used OME 60028 ($100) and new OME springs ($160), $260 for the rear.

All in all I spent about $420 ish on my complete lift not including diff drop and new front bushings. Only mistake I made was using 891 in the rear instead of 890. Ride is to rough for me. You have the right idea by trying to assemble a cheap lift but there is no point to assemble a cheap lift with parts that have no life left in them.

All and all it is your rig, I'd be happy to show you my setup if you would like to meet up sometime. Heck, I'd probably even be available to help you install in you like. Hit me up.
 
SRS: i'm planning on taking it up to 33's... i'm at 32" now with a little rubbing. how much BL you think i'll need? i just don't want to make it too top heavy since i've already rolled a 3rd gen

Wrex: My ideal front set up would be the Tundra TRD shocks and springs, i'm just having some trouble finding them. any ideas. I like the OME for the rear... or the LC rear set up, whatever is easier for me to get a hold of.
 
Well to be honest I'm not really sure. I'm lifted 4.5-5 inches up front, and still needed a BL to clear at full flex. At the same time, I've seen a few people on here that aren't running a body lift at all. I would assume 1.5 with the right wheel spacer should work. Hopefully some others will chime in on this to give a better idea.

also- the LC rear set up... BADA$$.. great on the road, and a sh^t ton of flex.
 
i think i'm starting to lean more towards the LC set up in the back...

do you guys think i can use some Tundra 5100's (i can get them at my local autozone for $135) with some OME springs? i did some searching (although i didn't find much) i found that the tundra 5100's will fit.

Tundra 2WD 5100's (product description): 46mm monotube shock absorber. Lower mounting: straight eye 14.4mm; upper mounting: pin. 5100 Series ride height adjustable.

4runner replacement shock: Shock46mm monotube shock absorber. Lower mounting: eye 14.2mm. Upper mounting: pin.

Or does anyone know how much the TRD springs are from the stealership?

You can probably get a pair of LC springs from Slee Offroad in Golden. I got a pair of 8 wraps a few months ago for $50. One of these days I'll get the TRD tundra front springs...
