Pinion Bearings on stock 4.88 diff

So, its starting to look like my junkyard special has bad pinion bearings or atleast are on their way out. So much for the 'safe bet to get driveline components from front end wrecks'! :tsk:

Anyways, wanted to know if the pinion bearings are the same for all the 8" toyotas? I know the ring gear is thinner in these 4.88 but not sure what else is different. What to make sure before I order the parts.

I don't know about the factory 4.88s. If the gears are thinner, I have a brand new pinion bearing that is slightly taller than stock. It came out of a Yukon kit. I think it's a koyo bearing.

Sounds like the bearing you have from the Yukon kit is for a V6 diff. The pinion bearing is slightly taller then the 4 cyl ver. I was just going to source the bearings here locally from a bearing shop but if you don't have a need for it, I'm sure I could take it off your hands! :wink2:

And yes, I have been searching Zuk's site alot, that's where I got the above information. But he doesn't ever mention bearing differences in the 4.88 stocker, just a difference of the thinner ring gear and pinion offset. But just because he didn't mention it, doesn't necessarily imply or confirm that they are the same or different.

V6 and HP Fronts are the same. The 4 cylinder thirds are different.

IIRC there are differences between the factory 4.88 setup and aftermarket, but i don't think it's in the bearing.
My PC crashed so I can't check for sure.

Thanks guys! Now just gotta get the parts and decide if I really want to try and do it myself or chicken out and get a shop to do it.
