placing floor jack under rear differential ??

Owners manual states to place jack under rear axle housing when lifting the vehicle, but is rear differential housing (pumpkin) strong enough to use as a center lifting point with a 3-ton floor jack?

This is my first Toyota and I've never owned anything but rear wheel drive GM cars/trucks. I've always placed floor jack under the rear differential to quickly raise the vehicle off the ground and place jackstands either along the axle housing or along the frame.

Thanks!

thank you kindly for quick reply.

I should have done a search first as I just found some great information on this forum.

It HAS to be strong enough. It's already holding up the whole vehicle. Second...the 4runner only weights 4200lbs (little over 2 ton). And lifting the rear you'll be probably only lifting 1500-2000 lbs.

Truth, I was under mine the other night and tried to do bench press the rear end of the truck with the bumper bar. Didn't do too well... popped my back tho which was a plus.

rear diff is fine, others might not advise it but i have also used the v6 rear hitch to jack from

When needed, I use the rear diff housing as a jack-point... I have a piece of really dense foam rubber that I put on the jack for extra traction and to prevent scratches.

Always use jack stands in conjuction with your floor jack.
