Plasti-Dippin' Doozi!

I decided to give it a go and love the results! I found two broken tabs on the back of the center part of the grill while I was removing it so I needed to fix that. A little JB Weld did the job and no more rattly grill!

I think that the badges are next... if I decide to keep them.

I love the look of the plasti-dip on that . It adds a fresh look to any Runner. Remember to get a clear coat on it before you start driving. It will save you the pain in the long run of having to strip and repaint the grill.

I haven't heard of people using a clearcoat over Plasti-Dip. What kind did you use? Any concerns about it flaking off?

Use Plasti-Dip UV

I highly suggest you use the Plast-Dip UV if you are going to use this material on your vehicle.

The corrosion and chemical resistance properties appear to be acceptable for the applications most folks are using this for - but I'd be concerned about the UV stability. They offer the 'UV Stable' version which imparts 'semi-acceptable' automotive application performance.

I say 'semi-acceptable' because their Technical Data Sheets don't give specifics as to what the exact UV testing was they performed and to what specifications.

Thanks guys! I love the look! I took my time cleaning and masking off, applied four even coats, and used a razor blade just to make sure the tape came off clean.

Now I just need to find out about clear-coating it.

All of the threads, pictures, and videos on Plasti-Dipping wheels, grills, and trim pieces and this is the first time I've heard about this. Has anybody used the UV-version?

My concern would be that the Plasti-Dip material, as a synthetic rubber, is not a thermoset material and does not cross link into a more durable coating and the polymers used are not inherently UV stable.

The UV formulation most likely only uses some UV absorbers to improve the UV resistance of the product.

On my truck I would either powder coat parts or use an automotive grade liquid to coat the parts. The Plasti-Dip seems to be a good cost effective, easy to use at home alternative. But probably not one I would choose for my vehicle without more testing. Perhaps someone from Plasti-Dip can provide some Xenon or QUV data - I'll shoot them an email and ask.

OK Ok, I used Krylon Semi-gloss clear coat. The one that states it does not yellow after application. I have no concerns of flaking. And UV plasti-dip sounds new to me.

Maybe I'll go pick some of that up tomorrow and spray it while it's still really clean.

I think that most who use Plasti-Dip know that it's not forever and most have found it to be more durable than expected... car washes and everything! Worst case, you can just peel it off and redo it if you want.

So I did a little clear-coating today. I used a matte-finish Rustoleum product that claims to be non-yellowing, UV-resistant. It really does seem to make a difference. The Plasti-Dip took the clear-coat very well and it gives it a "harder" surface... one that seems like it will hold up a bit better to everyday life. After seeing and feeling the results, I'm glad that I took the time to coat it.

Looks good. I did the same thing to my grille a few weekends ago. I also took it off to plasti-dip and found all the brackets were broken on mine, kinda weird Pics are on my T4ROTM page.
