Plasti-dipping dash

Thanks for posting back with the update. I just did my rims and trim in plasti-dip so the interior is next!

I know I'm bumping an old thread and I know you've sold your rig, quicksilver, but it appears you have a different kind of wood trim than me. Is your trim integrated into your dash somehow or just stuck onto the dash? I really want to plastidip my faded wood pieces but since they appear to be stick-on, I don't know how I would make them ever stick to the dash again once I pry them off to dip. Or am I missing something?

looks like he had the factory integrated wood trim and urs was probably not factory wood trim but was a kit that could be added to make it look like it did. typically they are stuck on with double sided sticky foam tape so u could just re apply some after painting.

I had the same trim on mine. It was in pretty bad condition, the clear coat was gone on most of the pieces and the wood was shriveled and dry. Some of the pieces were pretty easy to get off, others, not so much. It's just the bare black plastic now, but looks better than that wood trim.

Plasti-dip will eventually peel on the on the interior especially where there will be natural wear from hands touching it and when it does it'll start look crappy really quick and it could be a flakey mess and redoing it just seems to be alot of work.

So you think sanding and painting it would be better? I guess what else are my options? It looks terrible the way it is.

I'm confused Stgo, so did you end up plasti dipping your dash or just peel them off and leave them off? If so, how did you remove the left over residue?

No, I didn't plasti dip the dash. It's just the plain black plastic. The trim was so old, most of it came right off, no residue or anything. I only had one spot, left of the steering wheel around the vent, that has residue. Goo gone has gotten a lot of it off but there's still some left. I've been too lazy to try to get the rest off.

Instead of plasti dip you should also look into Dinoc, Interior Design Solutions, 3M DI-NOC Automotive Finishes, Carbon Fiber, Wood Grain, Brushed Aluminum. People on the VW forums use it a lot. I've never tried it but it seems to be really sturdy and is supposed to peel off without leaving residue.
