Plastidip 5th Gen Wheels?

Note that the first wheel has some tire shine that got on it. I was real easy to do. I sprayed 3 coats of the plasti-dip. I will peel it off and retry to do it again. My first coat was real heavy and when it dried it came out really nice. Smooth texture and it was actually shiny and not flat.

Wow! Those wheels look great! Was it a PITA to plasti-dip them? Any suggestions (or possibly a detailed writeup :biggrin2 for the rest of us?

I'm going to attempt to do this again, this time with 1 heavy coat. When I first did them I did do a first heavy coat and it came out perfect! It was smooth and actually had a gloss to it! I will take pictures as well.

Basically:
1. Take off your wheels
2. Clean them really well
3. Mask off any parts where you don't want the plasti dip. I used index cards in between the tire and lip of the rim to avoid getting the plasti dip on the tires.
4. Wait 30-40min in between coats

Note: Carefully remove any tape you used where you didn't want the plasti dip. Don't just rip it off, you don't want some of the dried plasti dip to follow and peel. I did allow the final coat to dry overnight.

I've washed the car once since the plasti dip and they are holding up. Used a soft scrub brush for the wheels, pressure washed them and they still look good. I've heard stories of the plasti dip holding up for a year

I am getting ready to do my SR5 wheels. I havent seen any SR5 wheels in black yet, I dont think, but there are plenty of posts on here of Mag Grey rigs with black wheels. I think it looks great, hence me wanting to do it. Just got to get the time to do it and when Im done I will definately post pics.

I havent yet. I got caught up doing other stuff but the bug is getting me again. Going to be installing wheel spacers soon so Im thinking that since I will have the wheels off it would be a good opportunity to plasti-dip them. If and when I do them I will definately get pics up.

So got two wheels Plastidipped and went great, UNTIL I was putting it back on and as I was tightening it with HAND RATCHET, then bolt snapped off in the nut!. FML

Do you have a pic of what it looked like on one of the other 3 wheels? I have a black SR5 and I'm looking at plasti dipping my wheels for a while before I upgrade to after market wheels. It'd be nice to see what I can look forward if I decide to go that route.

Sorry for your bad luck.... Why we are on the topic of wheel lug studs, can anyone recommend me a reliable and accurate torque wrench that wont break the bank? I have heard of this issue time and time again, are the studs just that weak?

I have black Limited rims (but I painted mine - oh and I have Mag Grey). But I think I am definitely in the minority when it comes to black limited rims so I figured I'd post a picture anyway).

PS - Like that someone else on here also converted their Piaa's into HID's! :naughty:

HAHAHAHAHa i sure did convert the 520's to HIDS and WOW what a difference!!! the 55w ddmtuning kit is pretty sweet!!! i used the drill a hole in the back method and it worked out great! Thanks for the picture of the black limited rims... I am having a hard time picturing them on a black Runner!!!

I have not attempted this yet, but I have been reading other peoples procedures online. Most place either notecards or playing cards around the rim and tape down. After each coat, they take a toothpick and go around the cards and rim to make sure there is no contact of the plastidip. Hope this helps!

I am dying for someone on here to try this. I am in the middle of moving and won't get the chance for at least a month.

The best way is to paint your wheels then remove the tape before the plasti dip dries. this gives you a nice sharp line. You need to apply all of the coats before they dry, just be careful not to let it run.

Nope. The best way is to NOT mask the tires at all. Paint your wheels with Plastidip and let it dry. Use your hand to rub the Plastidip off the tire- it will come off easily and leave the wheel untouched.
