Please explain the different 4x4 systems in the 5th gens to a newb.

Ok, so one last question and then I won't bug anymore. What does the SR5 4WD use to aid traction when in 2WD? Let's say I'm in 2WD and one of the rear wheels slips. Is there any taction control aid then? In reading about ATRAC, it sounds as if it only works in 4WD. My wife is currently out of town with my 4R si I can't get to the owners manual.

That would be the standard (Trac) Traction Control which is on the cars and other non 4wd vehicles. On the 4runner the 2 systems are tied together..

Yup, between 4H and 4LO

Has anyone checked the manual? Perhaps the SR5 and limited have a neutral position, just not a clearly marked way to engage it? I know some other vehicles that are like that.

The Limiteds have 4H and 4L. They do have a transfer case, it's operated by push button.

The only 4Runner with a manuel transfer case is the Trail.

All t-cases have a neutral position.

Finally got a chance to go out yesterday to Gorman/Hungry Valley to play in the dirt w/ my 4Runner. I took my 2 year old son out w/ me. It was his first time off-roading and my first time in the 4Runner in dirt.. I'd have to say that I'm super impressed with the way it handled off-road. This is a very capable vehicle. I was concerned about the effectiveness of ATRAC, but never got to experience it as I never used 4LO. Actually, I only ended up using 4WD a few times as 2WD worked well in many situations. I'm sure that if my son would not have been with me, I would of tried some more risky stuff that might of called for the use of 4LO. I think it was a good first time out. As far as TRAC goes, I felt that kick in alot especially in deep sand. I experimented with turning VSC off and it seems to me that even with it off, both rear tires spun whenever I lost traction which kind of surprised me. I could be wrong, but that's what it felt like.
