Please help advice.....clunk noise from park to reverse and..

Hi i get a clang or clunk noise when I go from park to reverse and sometimes if I go from park into drive?? It is intermittent though and doesn't happen every time?
Any ideas you guys have I would greatly appreciate.

Is it a subtle thud coming from the rear differential area? Also happens when shifting from reverse to drive?

I have that. Honestly I've assumed its the driveline thud or thunk that people complain about, that's remedied from better lubrication, and regular maintenance of the lube points on the driveshaft. Just haven't done anything with it yet.

Interested to hear if anybody else agrees, or if this is something totally unrelated, and potentially problematic.

I am not sure. At first it was like a clank so I figured its a loose pad...(my husband is going to check the front pads tomorrow.) but now I sometimes here it when I go from Park to drive. It does sound like more of a thud when it happens in drive. Sometimes just turning the car on and not even touching the brake or putting it in gear it makes a clang noise , which leads me to believe that particular noise is a pad. The one I hear from park to drive definitely does sound more like a thud.

I called my mechanic because I was worried maybe tranny???> but he said if it's shifting fine he would lean more towards the pad issue or universal joints.....

If you are referring to a brake pad, I seriously doubt that’s your issue. “Loose brake pads” aren’t really a thing, unless you also have something seriously misadjusted on your brakes. Anything loose enough to make a noise like that in your brake system would be affecting your braking as well. You’d feel it in the brake pedal or in the vehicles ability to slow down.

Sounds like a u joint, differential, or heat shield that’s loose. Or some combo of those things. Start by poking at all of the heat shields under the car. If you can’t find something that’s loose, see if the driveshaft has any play around the barrier bearing or u joints.
