Please Help Me Decide

Hey everyone. I'm trying to decide on what 4runner to get and need everyone's expert opinion.

There is a brand new '17 off-road premium w/ the tilt/moon roof, KDSS, running boards, and all weather liners at my local dealership for $38,175. This seems like a pretty good deal but I am hesitant to go for the KDSS as it seems like just another thing to go wrong.
Price wise, this appears to be comparable with a non-loaded off-road premium and that is attractive.
Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Are you planning on running this stock or significantly modifying it? Not that you can't modify a KDSS-equipped rig, but that would probably influence my view. (Personally, I'd opt for KDSS and run it near stock, but that would suit my usage better and may not suit yours.)

Sounds good to me...My 2011 Trail has KDSS and I have had no issues with it. I surprised it has been sold already.....around here they barely have any 4runners on the lot, much less a off road premium model.

Running it stock. I hear the KDSS also helps on-road handling, however.
Is it reasonable to expect the KDSS to last over 100k miles without repair/overhaul?

I don't have KDSS on mine, so I can't speak to that, but I've not (yet) read anyone complain about its reliability. And most people seem to not like the stock handling, so I'd test drive this against an SR5 to get a sense of the difference and see how they feel to you. My understanding is the KDSS is one of the better stock options for on-road handling.

Out here there are plenty of 2017s on the lots still, which is kind of surprising especially with how inexpensive gas is now (relative to what it was a few years ago). I have noticed that Toyota trucks are like Subarus in that they seem to go for on average about 10-15% more out west than they do out east.
 
you shouldn't worry about KDSS, but if you are really worried about it you could always just get an extended 100k or 125k mile warranty for probably ~$1,000k or your insurance company might offer mechanical breakdown insurance (Geico has 7yr/100k mile Mechanical Breakdown insurance I think costs about $60 per 6-month plan but has a $250 deductible).

I don't plan on ever going LT or major suspension changes, so the KDSS was a must have for me. I enjoyed the handling differences enough that even if I have an expensive repair in 10 years it's still very worth it to me.

I cant speak for the KDSS, its not an option in Texas. However I just bought the 17" ORP and the price is right on. I shopped and priced for months. If I had run across this you might not have ever seen it...:naughty:
 
I'd say that's a pretty good price, paid $36,700 for regular trail with KDSS, all weather mats, and crossbars. Checking Toyota's website MSRP should be well over $40k for that setup.
 
I drove mine for a year stock with KDSS, loved it both on and off-road, now have heavily modified the suspension etc and love it even more on and off-road. I think you will be very happy with the handling and if you decide to modify it, it is easier than most people think, just takes some research is all, and this forum is full of great info from others experiences. Best of luck, you will be happy with running it stock or modifying it, and get years of worry free driving. :)

It's a pretty well-regarded feature around here, and I'd not hesitate to buy it IF I planned to stay stock, suspension-wise. If you're concerned, get the TOYOTA extended warranty. Negotiated WITH the purchase, half of the MSRP price is possible.
 
Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I can't speak to the KDSS but one thing about Toyota they don't just throw random things into vehicles. They tend to stick to reliable things for the most part. Look at the Taco and 4runner they are some of the reliable vehicles for a reason. Just my two cents.
 
I had KDSS on my '10 TE and added a 3" lift, 285's and had no issues whatsoever until I got rid of it at 80k miles. I still see it on the road today and I'm guessing the guy hasn't had any issues either and it's still set up the same as when I sold it.
