plugs - What do you guys use?

I bought the rig w/101K and the limited service records I got do not show any plugs or wires done...plus I think it turns over too many times before it fires up. I ran into a "4runner freak" and he said the ONLY plug to use was an NGK BKR5EKPB-11.....man is that a long plug number! :bugeye:
What do you guys know about plugs?

That is what I just put in the truck yesterday.

How hard is it to access the plugs? Is it as hard to get at as the oil filter?

The back one of the drivers side is the hardest of all of them to access, but other than that it is easy

I run Bosch Platinum plugs. I know that some of you will bash me for not using NGK, but I let the plugs speak for themselves. This is the second 4runner I've had that I have used these plugs in without any problems! As far as changing them, You just need some socket extensions and a swivel and some time and patience. Most people will say OEM are fine, I'm using NGK

A technician once told me that unless your engine is designed for platinum plugs, you should not use them. You may actually get a better spark from standard NGK's.

UPDATE: I changed the plugs to the NGK's and also replaced the wires with OEM's. I have put about 4K on since the change..... Bad news is that it cost over $120 bucks....the Good news is that I have picked up almost 2 mpg's on the highway!:awais:

My buddy works at a Toyota dealer and laughed off the platinum plugs. I have a SC in mine and he said to put in the plugs that are standard on a Tundra. Seems to run very well.

Probably the 3.4...they have a different burning temp. Not sure if it's hotter or cooler.

Platinum is used to give a bit more longevity but platinum isn't that great a conductor of electricity and IMO those plugs are over rated.

Iridiums from URD Racing.

Engine runs smoother and seems to have a little more power.

Nice thing is I don't expect to have to change them for 80-100k.

My 99 limited has a hesitation when accelerating after a stop or shift into drive. While pulling my boat at a ramp I have almost rolled backwards in the water. Woah. Not funny.

A colleague recommended new plugs and air filter.

While the filter was easy to replace, how the heck do you get at the plugs?? Sheesh.

Do you have to pull stuff off first. While mechanically inclined, would appreciate very specific steps. Any photos you could point me to?
