Just posting my newest toy: I replaced my 12 inch Rockford Fosgate sealed subwoofer with the Polk DXi112 ported subwoofer. I did this because I had the opportunity to pick one up for $60 new versus paying the regular retail price of $250.
While I liked my Rockford Fosgate a great deal, the Polk is a huge improvement. It is a 2 ohm subwoofer and the enclosure has a lot of volume, so it thumps pretty well with 500 watts rms powering it.
I didn't do this so I could have the kind of car stereo you hear coming from a mile away, but I wanted good-quality bass across a wide spectrum of music. Although ported subwoofers might not have the same tightness in bass that sealed models do, this thing really performs well.
Yes, I give up some trunk space, but this is easily removed if I need to haul stuff in the back. Also, I have a pretty good mix of other speakers including Polks (MMs) and Rockford Fosgates in the doors and in the tailgate, so even without a sub the bass sounds pretty good.
