Poor V8 fuel economy caused by Awd?

I equate this debate to penis size. IF you have a v6 you will make reason as to why it is better. ie:it is not size that matters it is how you use it, it is not the size of the boat but the motion of the ocean. The big penis brothers know what we have. We don't need to come up with reasons because we know what we got.

Can we have people note down what RPM their truck is when cruising at 55MPH? Lets see if the V6 is actually working "harder" than the V8... I don't know if its a valid test, but would give us an idea during real world conditions.

Not really...I think the "working less" part would entail:

- Less throttle opening to reach desired speed
- Less throttle opening to deal with a certain load (climbing a hill, carrying people, towing, etc)
- Less rpm to deal with a certain load

Rpm at cruise (where you're hardly using any throttle) is not a great indicator of how hard an engine has to work. Eg. my old Intergra cruised at 75mph at 4,000rpm and still got twice the mileage the Runner does....

Last week I was doing 30mpg at 65mph, and it surprised me that if I took the foot from the gas pedal, the speed decreased notoriously more than on my previous car (an aerodynamic Peugeot 407).

So, out of curiosity, I started tailgating a container trailer.

Guess what? I started doing 64 MPG!!!!!!!!

I don't think chains require anything.

A belt is only $50. But it is a lot of labor and becomes a convenient time to replace other parts.


At the dealer service dept I don't think a water pump + timing belt cost much more than just a water pump. Labor is the biggest item.

Every engine will need a new water pump, V6 or V8.

Belts, hoses, gaskets, and tensioners are also are replaced.

The BMW X5's V6 produces 225 hp and 214 ft. lbs of torque at 3,500 RPM. The 0-60 time for the V6 X5 is 7.8 with a manual, BUT 8.3 with an automatic. Now, the V6 4Runner has 20 more hp and 68 more ft. lbs of torque than a BMW!! I think that explains why it consumes more gas than the V8. Don't think that the V8 X5 gets such great mileage. My parents have a V8 X5 as their other car and so far the best mileage it has gotten was 17 mpg.

The V8 makes 10 less HP, on regular gas, and more torque.

The V8 and V6 both get poor MPG.

The 5 speed was an all-new transmission, all new ECT.

The 4 speed was from the previous 4Runner, Tundra, Taco.

V8 - old engine, new transmission, more torque.

V6 - new engine, old transmission, 10 more HP on premium, part time 4WD.

Timing chain never needs replacement. What I was getting at is that a V6 is normally cheaper to maintain than a V8 because of materials and labor.

V6 runs on regular gas as its in the manual. It says run premium for "best performance" or something like that, I'm sure it says the same for the V8.

I think the v6 also uses better clips to attach the upholstery to the doors. Defintely go with the v6.

as to the original question, yes permanent AWD will hurt gas mileage. How much is a topic of debate though, but if I had to guess I would say probably 1mpg or so.

I seriously doubt there will be much difference in the gas mileage of a 2WD V6 vs a 2wd V8 for the 05s.
