Man, so many people have been on the road for hours now.
Got off at 3:10 at PDX, and didn't have too much traffic getting out to Sandy. I stayed off the freeways though.

I'm glad I'm at home staying warm. I hope this is event elicits a re-thinking of the infrastructure here. Portland traffic is bad in fair weather; add a little snow and it becomes a nightmare.

Left PDX at 4 to Columbia blvd westbound. Hours later I make it across the interstate. Cars stuck at the high point of the bridge spinning all over the place. I swear at least 15 cars in the ditches all the way to Cowlitz county. Arrived home at 838. I'm at about 900ft and the roads were great up here. A light dusting.
Good thing for you. One of my guys was up in Seattle today. Flew back and is staying here at work. Lives in Salem. He brought his cot and a new sleeping bag he wanted to check out anyway for the OBDR.
Worst thing ever is Washington not approving Tri-met. That would open up A LOT of the highways. The fact that 111 people move to Portland EVERYDAY doesn't help matters either.

ODOT to use Salt
Not sure if everyone heard this or not but due to the mess we had in December Portland ODOT will begin to use salt in certain areas.
Make sure you rinse off your undercarriage the first chance you get.

Just drove north thru Portland on I5 in rush hour last night... brutal
The further south you go in Oregon the colder it gets, because it goes higher in elevation. The coldest spot on the whole I5 was Yreka in California. Portland was snow free. Managed to avoid salt under the car the whole drive back from LA to Canadian border because it was all dried up, then in Vancouver the city crews were out spraying salt on the roads and I got some underneath. My garden hose is frozen, I'll have to thaw it out today and power wash underneath.

IDK, I'm not to happy about the salt thing, but then again Portland is filled with probably the dumbest people I've ever met ( come on I know you all agree)so maybe it's for the best.

This salt thing isn't terrible because Portland really does have the worst drivers. I have lived in Minnesota, Colorado, and Nebraska and I know salt will help and have never had a rust issue. While it can affect our rigs, its not like you drive over it and and immediately you're screwed.
If you clean your rig even a week after the snow, you'll be fine.
I'm excited to see how Sylvan and other areas are improved by salt use.

I'm staying out of Portland, and hoping to avoid the salt 100%.
That said, the local self serve power wash station was still open today, so even if you can't hose it off at home, there might be somewhere you can go to power wash it off.

Yup same here. We don't get the weather the "rust belt" folks get. It's only going to be in isolated areas. For me it's the same as coming back from Long Beach or the Oregon coast. Nice good rinse underneath and good to go. Hopefully we'll see less accidents and bottle necks all over the place. Smart move by ODOT actually.

If you aren't starting out with much rust then the salt shouldn't be a problem, just inspect for where the salt has started some rust areas then fix those. The problem is on trucks with significant rust since the paint has come off, then the whole underside is exposed to the salt and it's almost impossible then to repair the rust spots since the whole thing is a rust spot. With the care members here give their trucks I don't think you are going to have runaway rust issues. I picked up a used rear axle in Oregon yesterday and one I looked at with over 200K (didn't buy that one) was in pristine condition, not a spot of rust.
I moved here from MN and brought my runner with me. I've been slowly removing rusty parts but I'm not worried about a little Salt 1-2 days out the year. You only need to worry about salt if they use it 5 months of the year.
I don't know yet if I'm amused or annoyed by the people going 5 mph on a dry road just because they see snow.

Lady is in the car. I fear a left cross out of the corner of my eye if we spin just a little....hmm maybe not very lady like but sometimes you need and aggressive one,right?:boxer:
As far as the salt thing, it just gives more courage to those that shouldn't be out anyways. I'm sure gearhart does more damage to my rig anyways.
