Portland oregon

i also have been up at browns a fair amount, though i wouldn't say i know it like the back of my hand or even half the trails out there(there are a lot of them). it is possible to drive some of the trails now, although they do shut down a lot of the trails for the winter(to fight erosion). i have a winch on a mobile mount, snatch block, a lot of straps, some extra cable, hilift, and some shackles. so as far as recover gear goes im pretty set. it would be nice to run some of them soon, who knows we might still hit some snow at the higher points on some of the trails; firebrake 5, archers, cedar tree... just a thought

Haven't been on here for a couple weeks but I would be in depending on when are where. I'm all the way down in Eugene

the kid has it nailed for conditions. most of the trails are closed or inaccessible right now due to low snow levels and erosion concerns. that said the area is so big you could still go up there right now and have a blast, there's still plenty to do. Due to the snow though, i highly recommend going with somebody that has a winch, so...when we goin kid? lol, j/k, sorta.

i was up a couple weeks ago with a buddy and we wanted to see how far up into the snow we could get. we went as far as we could and when we went to turn around my buddy go into a rut and anything he did to get out got him closer to the ditch. he's experienced but in those conditions it doesnt take but a blink of the eye to find yourself in a bad spot.

between my rig and his winch we got him out no problem but without either he/we would have been screwed. Moral of the story, DONT go alone, and if at all possible, have a winch, or a friend with one.

So i suspect there may be some intrepidation for some people wondering what they might getting into with browns camp. so here's my take fwiw. my runner is for the most part my daily driver and i have zero interest in beating the crap out of her. that said i love the adventure of pushing her/my limits, going where others cant etc. The beauty of browns camp and TSF OHV area is that there is something for everyone.

Many of the trails have signs at the trail head that have the name of the trail, a number designation, a vehicle designation (single track, quads, 4x4 etc,) and a difficulty rating. this information can be cross referenced with a trail map you can get with your permit or here: http://www.oregon.gov/ODF/tillamookstateforest/docs/TSFOHV09.pdf

the closest thing i can compare it to is a ski resort with the trails, the names, etc. so if you know how to read the map and you are aware of your surroundings, there is no reason to get into anything beyond your comfort/skill level. so no double blacks if you dont want them.

it really is like disney land for 4x4. this is why $12 for a 2 year permit is something im happy to pay. in addition to the state forest management a lot of areas and trails are maintained and improved by local 4x4/riding clubs.

if you look at the map you will notice that the majority of trails are off limits to our runners but again, the area is so big you could ride all day and not do the same run twice, so fear not.

Nate, i hear what you're saying on asking for help and depending on others, im the same way so all good. the good thing about this community and out on the trail is ive found that people are happy to, if not seek out the opportunity to help others. when we were up a couple weeks ago we got to winch out a jeep from the ditch. there were like 5 jeeps up there but it took a couple 4runners to complete the rescue. that was pretty gratifiying the whole toyota winching the jeep thing. wish i had some pics.

so as for me im not a pro by any stretch nor is my ride. i dont have sliders yet so no boulder gardens for me. ive only been up there a handful of times so im no guide by any stretch. that out of the way, i live in hillsboro, maybe 30 min +/- from there, and i recently lost my job so my schedule is pretty wide open. Only prob is i have temporarily stored my 4runner at my moms house in salem in exchange for my recently deceased fathers 2007 corrola. with gas prices it was a no brainer to trade out the runner as much as i miss it.

so if anybody wants a passenger to ride with them id be happy to meet up and join you pretty much any time. today tomorrow, saturday whatever. securing my ride will take a little bit of advance planning, gas money etc.

i suspect that trail conditions will be opening up and improving steadily over the next month or so. as for right now there is plenty but i think tires are everything and will make or break you out there right now.

here's a video from a nice run we did last fall to give you a taste of the kind of runs i like: YouTube - Trail

so, forgive the wordy reply, it happens when youre unemployed. so...when we goin?

is that cedar tree trail? and i would have an open seat, my wife would probably not go, being 7.5 months prego... not her cup of tea at the moment lol but she loves it most other times, she even has her own truck -85 4x4 yota extra cab as well

Thank you!

Criera and the kid,

Thank you guys for the details! For me, the trails look like fun and look easy enough to do without too much worry of body damage which is really my only concern but then again :happens: and you gotta keep smiling :)
I still have no good dates in mind, but starting to look like early next month will work out for me and my girl.

well as with any place you wheel, body damage is possible(even at the mall for you mall crawlers lol). it just all depends on how careful you are, i have taken my truck(s) out there numerous times, most of the time never getting damage, but i have also had some dented panels too. but like the most of us, im not too into bashing up my runner as it is the family rig and daily driver for me(my other trucks are a different story but i still dont try to smash them). so im not gonna do any trails that ill likely have damage from, but if it happens im not gonna cry(unless i flop it on the roof/side somehow) poop happens and thats why i know someone in the auto body business lol.

Absolutely understand the dangers and potential for damage and/or failure while off the pavement... Ask me "how deep that puddle looks" and I will giggle and/or cry and maybe even give you a little :flipoff:... that was a loooong day. My passenger fender is already a little tweaked because my older brother backed into me with his Heep:gun4: like a month after I got my truck. Nobody "likes" to beat up their daily driver/nice rig but...

Bottom line is this:
If I was terrified of body damage, and cried everytime it got scratched I would have got a two wheel drive.

Awesome to see so many people interested! I just met someone with a 2nd gen taco and he has a few built toyota buddies who also want to join. Anybody opposed to that?

This weekend is out of the question (4/15 - 17)

Next weekend is Easter so I'm sure alot of people have family obligations (but if not we can do that weekend! and have our own easter bbq!)I have Friday saturday, sunday, monday off! Except I will be having friends and family over on Sunday. Monday might work? (4/22-25)

The weekend after that (4/29-5/01) is the weekend before my finals so I will be quite busy.

(5/06-08) weekend is my graduation weekend.

SO...either Easter weekend or the second week of May? What do you guys think?

Have any of you done wheeling up near Cougar in WA? I know there are alot of fire roads but no trails. When it snows in the winter time it's fun to see how far you can get when you air down to 7-10psi and hit 4lo

I'm not too familiar with that area, but it sounds cool!

I think TSF offers a wide variety of stuff for all of us depending on how built our rigs are and how much risk we're willing to take.

ive been up there but not in in winter and not to wheel. amazing country up there, lava canyon, ape cave, mt st helens.

as for browns Im totally flexible myself so ill just chill and see what works for others.

Kid, yeah that is cedar tree, good eye man. I didnt know anything about it before hand, pretty neat find to just happen upon. Prob one of my fav runs. I really liked university firepower too (both directions).

also fwiw i have a bunch of recovery gear too minus a winch. straps, chains, tree savers, shackles etc. and just so peeps know, besides the permit they do require you to have a fire extinguisher on board too, though i doubt you'd get hassled this time of year but you never know

Heres a pic of the cedar tree (not mine) name sake for those who havent been there.

yeah the more the merrier, as long as they are Toyota's lol(just not jeeps). Criera, you know that Toyota filmed a commercial there for the FJ... just an fyi. as far as easter weekend id be down for that monday, if only to do a little reconnaissance mission/intel gathering... wouldnt have to be an offical trip, but just something to kinda get an idea of whats open, and conditions of the open trails. i also have a few maps of the tsf area. if you ever see the sheriffs dept out there snag one from them, they can keep you from becoming too lost. id say for the main run it would be best to wait till a little later in the spring, that way more trails will be open and it will give more of us a time to plan and be able to free up the time to do so. as far as the fire extinguisher goes, ive never been asked about one, though i do have them in all my trucks(minus the runner -need to put one in) but all the sheriff has ever asked me for is if i have the permit. and as a rule of thumb as long as you arent being stupid and driving off the road/trails and being a danger to your self or others the sheriff doesnt care and is all for people going out there they even have shot with us occasion:sniper::gun5::uzi::ak472:

I will be out in OR visiting family.
not sure how a week day would work, but maybe a Sunday I think the 15th might work.
but then I am heading to Bend for the Pole Pedal Paddle on the the 18th for race day on Sat.

good stuff over there to play on too. as if I remember from many years past I played on.

would be fun for a gathering if we can pull it off when I am in town.

well we can always try for it... let us know what dates you will be here for sure and we can try and make something happen, even if its a small group.

i just got some new truck shoes(tires) on today so im good to go now

I got new shoes too. :naughty:

will keep posting as it comes closer

May 15th is lookin good to me too!
Let's make it happen fellas :hungry:

I should be able to make it to town by then coming from Montana.

should ready to go play. just hope to have my winch and lights installed for awe factor. thinking it might not be needed for this wheeling trip. but you never know.

well if the army cancels my school(fair chance of it, two other guys schools have just been cut) then im in, and i have a winch as well -its a good idea to have at least one, there are some "challenging" spots on the trails.
