Possible engine replacement or rebuild

Varies. What's was going on the yards cleaned up. When metal was up they destroyed a pile of them. Several yards got rid of the 3rd gens.

One pick and pull around here is crazy. We never know what the prices are so we stay away from then.

By my one buddy's house they crushed then all.

So I am starting to look around to see if any are around. We do have a few full service garages around here but most of those have nothing.

One is $300 as an example. Mostly not horrible. That would be a pick and pull

Just wanted to chime in and say I've noticed the same thing in my area. Ive been looking for lift parts, so have been going to a lot of yards lately. I'm in south-east Texas and many of the yard in my area don't have any. I see a billion 3rd gens driving around, but very few at the pick a parts.

Not sure if that's a good or bad thing haha.

I haven’t gone junking in about two years but if a yard had a 3gen it was always a 96 or 97 with the lower control arm mount on the drivers side. In my years of junking while owning a 3rd Gen I only remember seeing three of them.

Till I discovered them not much was left.

Yup, seems pretty common here too.

Each yard I've been to maybe has one or two.

Oh the prices for the 3rd gens went up around here. I used to really get the rotted frame complete trucks reasonable.

Yes. I just pumped 4k into the shitbox but that was total including purchase of the rig.

After they tried to kill the world prices really climbed. So I can't buy the complete trucks for what I used to. Oh well. :(

I once picked up running 2002 2WD 4Runner for $600. Those days are long gone.

Thoughts on market for T4R before or after replacing engine

Hey all, I am reviving old thread as I just registered so I don't have permission to create new threads yet.

I have a 2001 T4R Limited with almost 300K miles. I don't know the details yet, but I believe the engine has just suffered a catastrophic failure, so let's assume for this discussion we are looking at an engine replacement scenario.

I could have the engine replaced and keep (or sell I suppose) the vehicle, but I wonder if there are people who want to do engine swaps/upgrades anyway-- and would prefer to do it on their own terms. For example, their choice of engine, their choice of how much of the work they want to do etc.

This thought has me wondering, if the market for old 4Runners would be heavy on people wanting to do engine swaps anyway, perhaps it would be foolish of me to have the engine replaced myself (unless I were determined to keep it, which may be an option).

I am interested in your thoughts on this dilemma. Thanks.

My $.02. I bought an 00' blown engine with cracked heads. Never pulled an engine in my life but I watched mtbtim's YouTube vid and swapped it in about 2 weeks doing the work as I had free time. Cost about ~$500 in tools (shop hoist ect) + $1400 for a used engine. As far as swaps, yes they are out there but I don't see that being overly common yet on these though I'm sure it will become more common as the years go on. I'd throw in a new motor and get another 100-200k out of it or sell it.

Thanks for your insights. I am realizing I am in the wrong stage of life to work on this myself. The poor thing has just been sitting there all this time and I've been busy elsewhere. Looks like I need to get this to someone who can do something with it.

Anyone out there looking for an inexpensive project car? I am in western Washington state, and need to rehome my old friend (2001 Limited T4R).

Putting a $5K motor with [I'm guessing] $3K labor is still way cheaper than buying a used good condition 4Runner.

I'm happy to know the video series infamousRNR and I created helped you with your engine swap.

For those that have never seen this series, here's Part 1.

I had my 5VZ-FE rebuilt last year, and while I love knowing what’s in it now, it cost more than a low-mile engine swap would've. If I did it again, I’d look for a Toyota engine for sale that’s already been compression tested and inspected. Rebuilding gives peace of mind, but so does a clean engine from a reputable source with a warranty. It really comes down to how long you plan to keep the vehicle.

I am doing an Engine replacement 02 Toyota 4Runner with $800 99 used mystery motor… JDM engines are now about 4K used from the junkyard is 1500. Getting ridiculous and I am on an extreme budget… I could go on and why I’m doing this by myself bottom line is I have a lot in the runner including 5k in bumpers two years ago. Once motor is running, I should be able to get 10K for it…without it running who knows.

SO……… ready to pull the engine except for 2 bolts. They are the top two hell housing bolts… I can barely get anything on them let alone turn the ratchet … how the heck do I get those bolts off?

Trust me I would’ve put this in the shop if I could. tough time with my limited, wrenching and tools.

I just need to get those bolts out so I can at least have a chance to put the new one in… then I’ll have to deal with the fact that it’s a 99 so the harnesses are gonna be different. I did get the harness with the motor, so that is a plus, maybe I can sell it?

Thanks for your help!

I'm in the process of doing the same on my Limited. I still have exhaust, flex plate, bell housing, and motor mounts to remove, but will not be tackling that until the junk yard motor I picked up is refreshed and ready to drop in.

From my research you need quite long extensions to go through the trans tunnel and wobble sockets for the top bell housing bolts.

I picked up the wobble sockets from Harbor Freight and these from Amazon.

Amazon.com

I was at Menards over the weekend and they had long extensions for about $20.

I have extensions with a wobbler and three taped together, but I'm struggling to get the fulcrum right. I've tried different links in various spots, and at this point, I need to get back on the road ASAP.

Got all the exhaust bolts off now except for the one on driver side behind valve cover… I would imagine that has to give me access. I’ll let you know.

Did ya get them out?

Much easier to access the top bellhousing if you plan on removing the transmission too. Remove transmission cross member and let some of the transmission weight pivot the motor back on its mounts. This opens up a gap between the body and the transmission, giving more room to work.

URGENT oh man Emergency

Did ya get them out?

I did get them out and I’m putting the new engine in and the engine that’s going in is used motor where the motor mount bolts to the block somebody knocked part of the block off and so I have no threads to attach my third bolt. I don’t know what to do suggestions?

Did ya get them out?

I did get them out. I hired a guy to help me pull rebuild and install. we did it together in like 2 1/2 days … now need to hook up hoses, wires, sensors etc..

The guy I hired had a caravan full of tools. He had extensions like Charlie above… (more than I have, and longer lol) with a 600-800 ft lb impact wrench… I have been using my dewalt screwgun/impact… just not enough torque… .

Speaking of which I did get a a few tools, a 1/2 in torque wrench/ratchet that is 10 to 160 pound I believe. And it has Newtons. The only other tools that I purchased was ratcheting box end long handle, 10, 12, 14 one schnazzzy flex swivel stiff springs. Had a bolt like end that you could get in with a low profile open end if needed. Wanted to buy a long handle flex head ratchet, but went with a torque ratchet instead and not happy with the flex box end ratcheting. Heads to big and to much flexabilty. Wish they had to click down. Ask me if you wanna link to what by not buy

had some 3/8 and 1/2 drive ratchets with limited short and tall socket set, jack handle for breaker bar when needed… soft hammer and box end …otherwise I extended the handles on my 3/8 and half inch to make them 18 inches long with copper pipe… luckily had a pipe cutter set. Bent on to the ratchet handle like a blacksmith lol let,me see if I have those pics.

with the guy I was able to still replace timing belt and components, water pump, oil pump … scrub the crap out of the valve covers and oil pan. Took off oil pick up to clean. Ended up having to make a gasket when putting it back on. The first one I cut was perfect them I lost. It took me three or four more tries to cut it correct again.

So yeah, the used semi rebuilt motor is in… converter bolts and Bell housing bolts are attached. Couple crazy stories. I was hoping that this mobile mechanic knew more than I did which I’m sure he does but from reading this or these forums and watching Timmy the TM .

The first thing I caught,, he was taking off flex plate and I heard one of the spacers fall and I said I’m sure you know you gotta remember the orientation and put it back on the other motor the same way is it?
… he didn’t speak Much English… I speak very little Spanish so we had our difficulties communicating …

I went around to check and the one plate is still hanging on the motor. Wasn’t real happy about that. I tried to check everything a couple times before dropping it in but I definitely was feeling rushed to get in thinking he might leave before I get it bolted. THEN I SEE ONE OF the flex-plate bolts is a random 14mm bolt. I guess he couldn’t find the last painted one so he found… I did have to let him know that he could’ve left it all upAnd then to make matters worse after it’s already been installed I saw Timmy numbering each one of the flex plate bolts.

the worries start in…

I’m worried about is the fuel injectors I was reading today if there’s any debris near, in or about the spark plug holes, or the injector holes you should stop drop and clean thoroughly. Same with the plenum? I did hit it with the shop vac and hope that I got everything. Duct tape and smaller hose used. Should I use my old injectors. And send out the 99… OR use the 99s and send the 02s

Either way… winner . For now? a brief clean? Again one of the main goals is to get back on the road sooner … now im thinking i should Be extremely cautious at the least, take a breather and be thoughtful about what is my best approach for long term success?

Using My 2002 harness, got new belts, power steering, AC , alternator idler pulley. I want to rebuild one set of the injectors. Would you recommend me rebuilding or sending them out to be rebuilt? I am so not going to put anything aftermarket on a 3rd gen especially when I start charging to build these for my friends lol

Didn’t do anything to fix the hole on the broken part of the block. Put in a spacer and was able to grab a couple threads. Hope this doesn’t become an issue? Just concerned with four wheeling. I mean I know JB weld seems a little weird every time I say it, but could it work? in this scenario or application?
