possible idle issue?

Hey guys,

While waiting for my GF to get out of work yesterday I noticed a strange idle. Was sitting for ~10 min w/ AC on low. I guess normal idle is 700-800? Mine was jumping up to 800-1000 then would slowly drop to ~500. Truck at 500 would sound sluggish and engine felt like it was shaking. Something in the dash possibly AC related would click when this was going on. Is this something I should keep my eye on?

Rig is a 1998 4x4 w/ 176,000. Plugs were done by dealer (under previous owner) at 128K. Wires have 98 printed on them though.

Thanks for the info. BTW, these trucks have great AC!!!

That is the air conditioning compressor comming on/off. I would not be concerned about it. It is normal but more noticalable when sitting for awhile at idle.

Mine makes that sound in the dash to, I assume that is the ac compressor switch or somthing like that.

I have 99 on my plug wires, it inticates the year of manufacture. If you bought new oem wires today they would say 2012. But mine are still fine after 13 years.

Sounds like you may be idling just a little low if it drops to 500. Try cleaning the air filter, MAF and Throttle Body.

I usually idle at 650-700 rpms and when the ac compressor kicks on at idle the RPMs go up to 850ish then back down to 650 when the compressor turns off.

With the clutch operating, idle should be another 100~150 RPMs above normal.

Clean your TB. If it is bad, I'd also clean the IAC.

60,000 is the max that these plugs should go so buy some dual electrode NGKs, gap them to .044, and go from there.

Shiznit, is this going to impact going to CK next weekend?

Was this a one time incident, or re-occuring?

Nope, CK or bust :)

I do want to do this though to fix my steering knocking sound before I go. I'm guessing our 4runners are built the same in the steering area? Would like to do what the person did on the second page. Seems a lot easier, just have to get the airbag out.

It is a re-occurring issue this strange idle but I'm sure the air filter, MAF and Throttle Body need cleaning. The plugs might also but will try those first. Looks like I have my next project.
