Possible move from 3rd gen to 4th gen

4th gen-tlemen.
I am considering making the switch from my current 3rd gen 98 Limited to a 4th gen. I would appreciate some advise. I have run across a local 2004 SR5 V8 Sport with leather and 68K miles, 2nd owner, lady driven. They want $15K for it. This is slightly below blue book according to what I looked up.

My question to you guys,(honest answers please), is it worth it? My 98 is in amazing condition and I like the truck. Only complaints are size and power. I have a boat, 2 kids, and all their crap to haul occasionally.

Is the $15K a reasonable price and if it were you, would you make the switch?
Thanks.

You can look up the maintenance records for free on the toyota owners website using the VIN. It's very easy although it only gives you maintenance records done at toyota stealerships.

I upgraded from a '99 3rd gen to a '07 4th gen.. mostly for safety for my family.

I was very surprised how much better the 4th gen is in every way. I purchased the V6 and it has MUCH more power and much better brakes than my V6 3rd gen. The handling is far superior and everything is more refined. It's also very quiet on the road. It has exceeded my expectations.

I've owned both a 3rd gen ('99 SR5) and now have a 4th gen ('05 SR5 V8) and honestly love both trucks. But I have to say that the 4th gen is way better than the 3rd gen, if only for the V8 option. Pass on the V6 and look for a V8, you won't regret it.

I appreciate the responses. I don't think I'll take a loss on my 3rd gen, in fact I think I may be able to at least break even on it. My one hesitation is that my 98 is paid for, a 4th gen is going to require a bit of a loan. Around $9K. That payment is easily affordable, I just hate the idea of a car payment. Of which we have none at the moment.
Any more insight from you 4th gen fellows?
Things to look out for, known problems, what years are better than others, etc?

I personally think the 3rd and 5th gens look way better than the 4th gens. But that's a good deal on a nice truck. But I hate white!

Also, how much more room would you be getting? If you really need the extra power, I'd pull the trigger for the V8 alone.:thumb3:

Definitely go for a V8. When I was looking I almost settled for a V6 because all the other V8's had cosmetic issues that I could not live with (dents, one was keyed, interior filthy etc) one of them had a seized actuator, not allowing 4LO to activate. Finally, a good one popped up, only an hour away and now 7 months later, I love my '03 SR5 V8! Also, from what I hear the V8 gets the same MPG as the 3rd gen 3.4 L and is TONS more powerful.

am also in the same boat as you, looking 4 a good 4th gen to buy.........so looking 4ward to hearing all the reviews

what i meant is that...am abt switching to the t4r from rav4, so i would like to see all the pros n cons, v6 vs v8, which 4th gen is most reliable/issue free etc

I went from 3rd to 4th gens, actually had both at the same time for a while. 6.5 years in the 3rd gen, going on 4 years this summer with my 4th. 3rd gens are awesome, thinking back it's those trucks that I think of when I picture "Toyota" trucks from back in the day. 4th gens are great too, but definately feel more mainstream like the rest of the world. Either way power, room and refine-ness are definately things you'll notice when you step up to the 4th gen, all good things.

I have the v8 in mine, love it, and as NJshadow mentioned I'm getting the same mileage out of the v8 as I did in my old 96 3.4L. I also have a 4L Taco (same motor) and gotta say I'm on the bandwagon that if you have an option definately go with the v8. The v6 is great also, but the v8 is so smooth and powerful I couldn't imagine not having it.

Ideally I wish that I could have a 99 limited that would never get old and I'd drive it forever, but you gotta move on eventually.

The BIGGEST factor is going to be maintenance record. I'd also get it inspected from a trusted mechanic.

FORGET CARFAX...Totally WORTHLESS. They even admit that they only collect less then 5% the repairs/service done on all vehicles. How can anyone possibly trust the validity of the data when less then 5% is reported.
