Is the Trail Edition needed?

I am sorry to posting here. I need some help. I would love a TE 4runner but at the most, can only afford to get a '09. The problem is, they are very hard to find. Can anyone first tell me if there is much difference off-road and snow wise between a trail edition vs a non-trail edition especially in the 4th generation models. Second, how hard would it be to convert an earlier 4th generation year with a locker like the trail edition. Sorry for invading your forum. I could use a little help though. Thank you.

I would wait for 2010 to be more affordable and get 5th gen in your case. It is hell a lot more hardcore off road then 4th. GL
