Potential Headlight Defect

I just noticed this while washing it last weekend. It is going to the dealer for the tranny lag, wheel vibration (for the 2nd time) and a few other things tomorrow. I thought the headlights were "were my own problem" but after reading this post, I will definitely mention it. Especially seeing as they need my ride for the entire day to perform about an hours worth of work....

just went int he garage and checked mine and didn't find anything. Limited, 13k miles, 8 months old :thumb3: :thumb3: :thumb3:

My Trail is doing the same thing with only 2500 miles on it. Mine is on the outside and can be polished out. :wtf:

Hope Toyota addresses the problem.

Sorry to hear this is happening - I'm very surprised.

Had my SR5 since November with 11,000 miles on it. I do not have the issue - in fact, I took a really good look at them after reading this thread and was surprised at how nice they still look.

4 month old TE, no discoloration yet. However, as an side, just got back from a 3K mile trip, lot's of night driving, and I was getting alot of oncomming vehicles signalling that I had my brights on, which I didn't. Have you run into this?

That said, I have noticed that the headlights really light up the road well. I'm pleasantly surprised, coming from BMW HID's.

yup, i've had that happen a few times.

I just checked my 2010 TE purchased in 2009 and it has the film on the inside upper lenses of the headlights too.

Are they going to replace this yet or not? Any TSB for it?

I have a 2010 limited that i bought in july and after washing it last night I noticed the same thing on my pass. headlight. It has two spots on the very top of the light.

Mine too...but, I rubbed them with a Terry cloth and the spots went away. I'll check to see if the spots come back and let you all know.

Edit....it now has the slight haze on the inside lens on the very top portion.

I wonder if everyone will eventually have this after reaching a certain amount of total hours sitting under the sun... I don't have it yet, but it's been garaged at work during weekdays so it still hasn't really been under the sun too much yet.

Hopefully Toyota offers a solution soon if this is eventually effecting everyone's headlights, or maybe this is an improvement to solve the "yellowing" effect that older lights get. Maybe that haze is protecting it somehow?

It would be good to see pictures of it though to see how much of a problem it is...

Sorry guys for the overdue reply, I've been moving and the headlight issue was put on hold. Here is what happened, the original dealer made an appt for the regional toyota rep to come look at the truck but I had to leave for work and ended up not being able to get it done.

I have been in touch however with them via phone and they have pictures. They have sent them into headquarters and r&d for review as a few other complaints have come in on the issue they said.

I just got back from a new dealer to me in my new neighborhood and the service manager actually realized that although it looks like its inside - it is actually outside and does rub off. They then detailed it out - reason I didn't notice it outside was because I've been using a touchless carwash and haven't wiped the surface at all on the lights.

Anyways, it should not be happening to anyone anyways and they are working on it so I'm told. The new dealer stated that the more people bring it to the attention of headquarters, the more likely they will look into it more - its suspected to be a manufacturing defect...also it is covered under warranty but is likely to worsen over the years. Most likely more of you have the same problem but have been keeping up on washing your 4runners more frequently and not letting it present.

hopefully a resolution is found before our warranties run out. My case number is still open so I will keep you posted if anything happens...also the service manager suggested not getting the work done until they find a definitive fix because toyota rarely will accept to replace the headlights twice for the same issue.

Side note - I had to pay for my 5000 mile oil change, i know its been discussed but I love how toyota changed the recommendation to 10000 when they decided to offer maintenance included with purchase....awesome.

anyone else run the headlight issue by with their dealer? and if anyone has a recommendation for a dealer in or around Chicago I would grateful...this place has quite a few but only one has good ratings and in person it was somewhat lousy despite the service manager being a nice guy.

I received a coupon book for the free maintenance in the mail a couple weeks after my purchase in July and it contains a free oil change coupon for 5000 miles. I'm just about there so it will be interesting to see if they honor it.
