Hi! I'm getting my first 4 runner tomorrow. I'm thinking about powder coating the stock rims on the limited. Has anyone else done this? If so post pics. I'm wondering if it will look odd since the tires will be the same.

I had my 3rd generation Toyota factory 5 starts power coated. They held up perfectly. I don't rock crawl, but the 4Runner seen dirt.
I tried to rattle can them. The sanding is what made me reach out to someone that had a sand/glass blaster. I used a full mask with filters. The cost wasn't too much more to have them power coated. I did this when I needed new tires. Put the 4Runner up on jack stands and spare. Plus some wood blocks. Took a few days. The only advice I would offer is stay away from the gloss. I had a choice off matte and 3 different gloss levels. I went with one gloss level up from matte.

Very good advice. I did matte on my WRX and believe me, pure matte is a ***** to clean, and everything (particularly brake dust!!!) sticks to it like nobody's business. It's like the matte finish just absorbs the brake pad particles. A satin finish would have been infinitely easier to clean.

if you are looking for a matte black finish, I would think about just plasti-dipping them. it looks pretty decent and can be done in an afternoon for much less that powder. It is also easily reversible.
I fell in love with my 2001 4Runner after power coating the factory 5 stars. It was like a new truck. Another advantage was the inside of the rims were like new. If you fill you tires at the gas station with the small air compressor, you are probably putting a lot of water in your rims that lead to corrosion. Sure this depends on dew point. My rims came out like brand new rims inside and out. They look more perfect than the photos.

Looks good! Far more durable than rattle can or PlastiDip too.:thumb3:

While I agree with the fact that powdercoating is more durable, as someone stated above it is a pain to fix when it does get scratched and chipped. A buddy of mine went out on his second trip wheeling and scratched the hell out of his freshly powdercoated wheels a week before I was about to take mine in to get done. He was bummed and asked if they could repair it and they said they could not. Said they would have to strip them back down and do it again. I plastidipped instead. The few chips here and there have been touched up with the stuff and you cant tell. I was against the stuff before I did it but I like the result and it it super easy to do and to touch up. Just my .02.

You're getting ripped off if you're paying anywhere NEAR the cost of SCS or FN wheels for powder coat.
Perhaps you'd be close if you figured in selling the stock wheels, and not powder coating them.

So did you end up powder coating your wheels? I'm thinking the same idea about mine now.
Totally agree that a wise step before powder coating your rims is get pricing on some new rims you like. Still in the end I really liked the Toyota 5 star rims and my rims were pretty true. I got a good deal on powder coating. I think I was around $330 or so to powder coat the rims. Maybe I should have sold my 5 stars and bought new. The rims I liked were $700. Really in a way many of our upgrades are nuts from a strictly dollar and cents standpoint. Then again, many of the people on the T4R.org are nuts. :loco:
I just got mine powder coated and they turned out great! I didn't have to wait much tho, It was there for two days. How ever I ordered new tires from them and had them do it while the tires were off so I didn't have to pay to have them mounted and balanced twice.. Ended up costing less than half of the cost for just showing up for a powder coat. If your close to needing new tires I'd just wait and ask them what kind of deal they can do. I schedualed an appointment however which was 5 days out but that was when the new tires would show up. They even painted my hubs to match, the only picture I have and Im not sure what size this is going to post...

Couple things, I think the market for stock Trail wheels is pretty prominent. I own a 14' SR5 Prem and just purchased a second set of 13' FJ/T4R trail rims. Had them PC'd for $400, I'm in the upper Midwest. Went with a darker shade, Baracuda Bronze. Looks really sharp, although not mounted and balanced yet. Will like the improved stance with 285's and 5100's on the corners.
A good option if you want to keep a more stock look with some internal gutt upgrades.

PC for $300?
I am also in Oregon, where did you get those powder coated for $300? Just picked up a 2020 TRD Off-Road and want to do the same thing. Has the PC held up over the last couple years? Thanks!
