Powder Coating Stock Wheels

I'm really wanting to powder coat my stock TE wheels flat black but need some help...
What would be the best way to get my wheels over there? I have heard it takes a few days to do so I wouldn't want to have to pay to leave it up on a lift at some tire place. Do I put it on blocks like they do when you leave your car in the wrong neighborhood??? Haha what are my options people? Thanks for any help!

i was thinking the same. Stock TE wheels powder coated dark grey on my black trial. I'm not big on black on black.
 
The safest is to buy 4 Jack stands and leave it on them. Could sit for years. Better than blocks. Powdercoating will take you more than "a few days", unless you are big budget Chip Foose on Overhaulin. I hate how that show portrays a build, without the 100 people they have and unlimited resources it is impossible.

I've powdercoated two sets of wheels in my life, both times it was almost a month. You may want to get your powdercoater to sign a contract to have them completed in a few days. Both times I did it though I wasn't in a rush, I just asked them to slip it into their next run of the colour I wanted.

Call around to a number of places too, see what the best price is.

Thank you very much for your help I will definitely make some kind of agreement on a time frame. I cannot wait a month without my 4runner. I was given a rough estimate of $65 a wheel a while back when I was considering it. Seems very fair. What should I expect for the price of simply removing the wheels from the tires?
 
What are you going to do with the center caps since they cannot be powder coated?

Are you just going to leave them off?
 
$10 - 15 bucks to remove each. About $25 each to mount and rebalance. $65/wheel is a great price.

For center caps, find the matching colour in a spray paint...preferably for plastic, or just leave them off. Those are the only options.

sounds like after everything is said and done new wheels may be the way to go....
 
The only bad thing about powder coating is it does chip and is very hard to fix and make look right. I had N-fab nerf bars on a 2007 tundra and after awhile the rocks from my BFG AT's started taking chunks out of them and they started to rust. I took them off and had them line-x applied to fix it cause painting them looked very bad. Ive seen on another forum people who off road just Krylon Fusion semi gloss balk stock wheels and they look great and very easy to scuff and repaint.
 
best bet (if you have the money) might just be to buy a set of used wheels exactly like the stock ones you have now. then, take them to get 'em powdercoated. then take the newly powdercoated wheels to the tire shop for a swap-out. then, take your stock take-off wheels and sell them on craigslist or ebay for the same amount you bought the PC'd wheels for. sure beats leaving your truck up on some blocks or jack lifts.

this is what I might do if I were to PC the stock wheels...

Is there even a market for the TE wheels? I thought of getting different wheels but thought my currents would just collect dust in the garage...
 
Should only be without your wheels for about 3 to 5 days. I am taking my 18x9 TRD wheels tomorrow to a local place for the same thing. Each place I have called said 3-5.
 
I'm very tempted just to paint them myself... I read some threads on people doing it and it actually looks pretty dang good. Anyone done this before and would advise against it?
 
I am in the same boat... but I was quoted 100/wheel. I am glad I read the thread!

I do agree with Sig2529, It might just be easier to buy the wheels and just sell the stock.

Does enyone know a good website to look for decent looking wheels? I want to keep the same look? so the aftermarket wheels sorta look like the stock wheel, I will be all over them

Actually the reason you do powder coat instead of paint wheels is that it is less likely to chip over the long run.

I had my stock wheels powder coated in Seattle, took about 9 days to get back. I found a spray paint to match for the plastic caps.

Looks good imho.
 
I had an integra gsr and everyone used to hit me up for the "blades". I coulda made a pretty penny if I had them still. Some stock items are always wanted.
 
Glad I'm not the only one that isn't in love with the bright silver TE wheels - really wish Toyota would make a TRD wheel upgrade (grey preferred) like they do for the FJs (and most every other darn truck/suv model except the 4R).

What are the chances a center cap from a FJ 16" TRD wheel would fit the TE Wheels? Same bolt pattern... You can get a set of the 2007 "Anthracite Grey" ones if you go grey powder coat, the 2008's are black. My local service dept has a display Grey FJ TRD wheel and I can see if the center cap will fit later this week.

I had them try to mount the wheel to my front end earlier this week to check fit and was totally disappointed when the rim wouldn't clear the brake calipers... I figured it was worth a shot since the stock FJs have 17"s and the TRD versions go with 16"s... The dark Grey wheel looked really good on my Silver TE (would post a pic but the file is too big...).

Take some pics and let us know how it works out...

And, Sig, Boomer Sooner (looks like we're PAC-10... er 15-ish bound come 2011)
