Power antenna fix with pic's

Thanks for all the help here, folks! Because of this thread, I was able to take care of everything in a little over an hour.

I've got an older 4Runner (98), and the bolt holding the motor to the car was pretty tight. I started to put some elbow grease into it, but the brace that was spot-welded to the frame started bending. I bent the brace back and then re-attached the metal nut to the part of the antenna that pops through the hood. By bracing it there, I was able to loosen the original bolt by really leaning into it.

I replaced the antenna on my 2002, and it went in fine, but when the antenna comes back up the motor keeps going for a long time after the antenna is all the way up. Anyone know what can I do about this?

This is great! Thank you for sharing. This is the one issue I have with the 95" I just bought. I'm thinking the band came off the motor. When I turn my truck off, I can hear the motor running, but my antenna doesn't go down. Going to look into this today.

Excellent instructions. A local Houston dealer wanted $200 to fix it,,, IF it was only stripped. I bought the new mast for $52 and in an hour and a half, it was fixed.

I have a 2002 SR5 with the fender flares and still had no problem accessing the antenna. I actually only had to remove 3 of the square snap-in retainers and could fold the liner back easily.

From researching different threads here, I figured out I should see if my ribbon was broken in two or just stripped. So, I first unscrewed the chrome collar and turned the radio on. It fed out only part of the ribbon with teeth so I knew I'd have to disassemble the motor to remove the broken off piece. Following the posted instructions, it was a breeze. It'd only be a 5 minute job if the ribbon was only stripped of some teeth and not separated in two parts.

Thanks for the write up!!
I used the original post and got my new power whip up, but in the process, the nut in the the center went MIA.
It still works with the outer "bag" wrapped around it, but I probably should get a nut for it.

Think Toyota will have the nut?

Though if not installed correctly a fixed mast antenna does stand straight. If the motor is still good, I usually replace the mast which about $40 from the dealer. Though most of the time you have to open the motor assembly to remove the plastic end that broke off.

have been through two replacement antennas. Both times the plastic track broke off when I first lowered the antenna.

Does this mean that it is the motor malfunctioning?

When I replaced mine, I didn't have to do any of that motor stuff. I just did the first step, then turned on the radio and yanked. It came right out. Then did the opposite when I put the new one in. pretty easy

Nice write up.I just did mine my plastic wire was broken inside the mast motor so I had to go through the fender wall.Took me me an hour to do it.Its really easy if the old plastic wire come out the old mast.Again I save my self $200.00 or more to go to the dealer.

All went well except the motor does not run long enough to pull the antenna down. It only runs about 1-2 seconds in both directions. Any thoughts?

I just replaced mine. The old antenna was broken off, leaving a nice, coarse, sharp edged piece sticking up. The motor didn't cycle with the radio, so I had to go into the fender. I found the PO had just disconnected the harness from the antenna! Once hooked up, the motor cycled fine, so I removed the offending antenna, and replaced with new one, only to find that my amazon.com bought replacement mast was missing the plastic grommet that keeps the assembly from falling out! I managed to scavenge the one off the old antenna, but I had to remove piece by piece to get the old antenna off. Once it was off, I installed it over the new antenna, once I unscrewed the cylindrical end off the top of the new mast. Once the grommet was in place, I replaced the cylinder on the top end, then everything worked well. ------Metalguy

nut stuck

I cant get the retaining nut to turn at all on mine. I even tried gripping it with channel locks, to no avail. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

Grommet size for the wheel well liner

Hi guys,

For this job Im pretty sure from what I am reading that I am going to snap My plastic grommets in the wheel well liner. To buy them toyota is like $2 a piece which Im not paying. I found them on ebay for cheap, $4 for 30 of em, but want to make sure they are the same size. Check out the link below and let me know if they are the right ones.
