Buy the real Toyota antenna masts, they are about $45 shipped on ebay. Don't buy the cheap ones. The cheap one goes down right but the motor would keep on pushing even though it is all the way up. I replaced it with the real Toyota antenna and it worked perfect.

I just did this last week. OEM toyota. There has been some discussion in different threads. On my '97 I can confirm the teeth face the front of the truck. Works awesome. I'd make sure to pull out the motor, open it up, and make sure all of the former parts are out.
My old 97 I went with the whip. If this would break again I'd consider that again. For now it's satisfying seeing it go up and down.

I replaced the antenna in the 96 with a Toyota mast in 2005 and put a switch in so it goes up when I want it to. So 10 years old. I've prolly just jinxed myself!
The 99 came with an antenna that would grind for several seconds after reaching the top. It wasn't a skinny or bad mast though. Whoever had repaired it before neglected to take out the broken bits. When I opened up the motor I found the broken pieces and also a broken gear that pulls and pushes the antenna in and out. My half-baked theory is that not pulling the bad bits out stuffed and stressed the thing and cracked it. It was still together enough to work-ish.
This thing I am holding is the thing of which I speak.
It was cracked in half where it fits over the post:

Mine's doing the exact same thing, I guess I should take it apart before I buy a new one just in case!

Brings back memories and none good. I did not have good luck with mine on my 01. Around 07 it was stuck up so I tried to remove it and wound up opening the motor to get pieces out. Switched out factory radio and the non OEM did not have whatever wire was needed to drive the up/down. Around 2011 it quit again and the new cable did not fix it so grabbed used one from junkyard and put new cable in it. Discovered that Toyota did not have any sort of disconnect for the antenna wire on the motor so had to pull the old wire to run the attached wire on the replacement. Also discovered if you want to run it where the old one was run you have to disassemble the air ducts so just ran it across the footwell. In about 5 years I went thru three cables and two motors. However just about everything else on the 01 was rock solid I really can't complain.
