Power Locks?

I cant justify spending 500 scoots to have the automatic lock working again... It reminds me of my first few cars i had, having to manually lock the doors. For me, its not a huge deal, but, if there was an easier fix than replacing the fuse block, I'd be on it. The fuse block is by the steering column, correct?

I'd swear I remember reading something about this way back where you actually have to reset the power windows by doing some weird combination of things like turn ignition on, rub your belly while chewing gum and then turning the radio to 99.5 on FM2.

I'm joking a bit of course, but this sounds familar and it was like some safety override or something you had to reset by going through certain steps.

Anybody else remember this?

It just doesn't seem worth it to me to pay $567 for the fuse block.

Got my 4R'99 Limited with same problem -- cant lock doors with button on keys or driver's door. But fix it with ugly hack and ~$7 :)

Problem: central lock cant lock or unlock doors. If you press lock/unlock button you can hear faint click somewhere near drivers left knee instead of loud clang of door locks.

Cause: dead relay inside "body control unit".

Solution: get new one and change it :)

Required skills: general with screwdrivers and good with soldering iron.

1. First of all find BCU. This is a big white box with fuses and a couple of relays behind the small door left to the driver's knee. Remove 4 bolts and plastic cover under steering wheel.

2. This box has a dozen or so cables plugged in to the back side so its not so easy to take it off. But you do not need to :) Unplug "front" cable (mine BCU has two of them while in manuals I can see only one) located just under fuses. On my BCU it was additionally fixed with plastic clamp. May be it is better to disconnect main battery "-" but I ignore this and everything is still alive :)

3. Look closer to that white flat surface with cable socket(s). It is a cover with 4 clamps, two on top side and two on bottom. Take a thin "-" screwdriver, insert it to that square holes and push clamps towards insides of the thing. I broke one clamp :) but managed to open the cover.

3. Under the cover you can find a PCB with some chips, relays and other electronic stuff. There are 4+1 relays. The biggest one is for door locks and is the source of our trouble (I hope). On this step you can plug the cable from "step 2" back to its place and try to lock/unlock doors while put you finger on big relay. You can feel relay shudder when you press the button and you can check that you find correct relay.

4. Disconnect main battery. And take PCB off its place. It is hold with 4 plastic clamps at corners and line of 15 or so big pins/sockets. Unclamp the clamps and pull off PCB from pins.

5. Relay name is "TAIKO TB2-100" which is a pair of relays in H-Bridge mode. Get a new one if you can. May be Farnell or Digikey or other seller can deliver it to you. But here in Russia it takes at least 2 months to get it (if you are lucky).

So you can just get a couple of general type "5 pins 30A@12V car relay" with sockets and wires. Smthng like this:
SPDTRelay.jpg

6. Hard step is coming: desoldering relay. It has 8 pins, 4 of them rather big so you need a powerful soldering-iron, solder-sucker and other tools. In my case desoldering process ended with big nippers and relay totally crushed into a small pieces :)

7. Solder new TB2-100 relay if you have one. Or solder wires from two cheap relay sockets. That requires some skills and art because you need to put a pair of thick wires into a thin hole in PCB. The schematics is quite simple so I have no files or drawings, but if someone need it I can make it. Plug relays, install PCB back into BCU, plug cables and test it! Should work like a charm :)

8. Route wires to the side of BCU and cut a hole in plastic cover for it. Assemble everything in reverse order. Write a letter to Toyota and suggest them to use relays in sockets instead of soldered :)

This is not a 4runner problem. You can find same troubles discussed in other Toyota cars forums.

Bringing this thread back!

Damn, thanks for the detailed response. Either I am retarded, or that sounds really confusing.....or both...

Is that the only option?

Sorry to bring up an old thread but my 57k milage 4runner had this happen. Dealer wanted 500 for a new bcu and was trying to tell me it wasn't the BCU and were all for door lock mechanisms.... told me not to trust the Internet lol. Anyway I found this part on partshotline.com....I ordered two from two separate salvage yards. The first one that came in was installed and works 100 percent!

See attached image... faulty bcu on left, replacement on right (top covers are off to show the circuit board)

Is there a way to pull a fuse or disable each door switch to make them all manual? Maybe cut one wire to each door switch and put a male/female connector on it and plug it back in when perhaps needed?

We'll since others have bumped it up, here I go.

Why do they look different? Especially the orange vs white plug?

I'm now having this issue. Mine stopped few days ago and is not worked since. Talked to local small shop and he says there could be up to 3 different fuse panels. Also claims 2 hours to replace.

Is it that bad to replace?

Thanks!!!

OK,

I read this through and it seems the instructions don't replace the entire assembly. My soldering skills are not good enough and I have an entire brand new assembly and want to replace the entire block.

It seems the back connections may be problematic but see no detailed information on any tips and tricks.

I attach images of the exact block I have. I have ignition disable vehicle.

Sorry if this has been covered but I'm not finding any simple discussion.

Thanks,

UteP

Driver Control Panel

Help!!!

Driver side door control panel not working properly. Doesnt seem to consistently lock doors, driver window control quit working and passenger door window only goes down. All of the other doors appear to work fine. Ex. I can control all locks from passenger side and passenger window.

door lock buttons dont work, keyfobs do

Hey Gang,
1st post. Sorry to drag up this older thread but I have an issue with my sons 2001 4runner and the locks. Just trying to find solution (very frustrated).
Quick history.
I purchased a 2001 SR5 for my sons first car (really didnt want the lady to get him Honda Civic). 4runner was in pretty decent condition for price but did have damage on driver door. No problem I thought. I'd just find replacement door in yard and replace. I did this.
Replaced the locking assembly and wiring harness. PITA but had it all partially put back together. Reconnected the battery and tested the window - good. Tested the locks - good. Cool I thought. Buttoned up and wanted to celebrate with cold one.
Not so fast. Door lock button on either driver or passenger door do not work (lock/unlock). Keyfob works. All doors lock and unlock fine. Key in driver door unlocks/locks its door and all other doors fine.

I double / triple checked everything (or so I think...) but cant find fix. I even picked up another wiring harness and drive door switch to rule those out. Same problem.
No blown fuses, which I'm not surprised because the power locks work from keyfob / door key.

I've read in hear that the FUSE BLOCK is the next possible culprit but how in the heck would that fail in this case? I'm just stumped.
In desperation I have the fuse block pulled tonight and will go on search for direct replacement but I'm asking this group if anyone else has some suggestions for me.

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Love to get this truck back together again. ;-)
Thx
Rob

OK, so yes all signs do point to the Body ECU, however I'm not a fan of phantom diagnosis. So here is how you can check it.

The wireless(key fob) system works by sending a signal to the Back Door ECU, which in turn sends serial data to the Body ECU.

The key lock switch, and the door lock switches on the door panels do almost the same thing except via different terminals on the Body ECU. The left and right inside lock buttons are both wired to the same terminals on the Body ECU connector 1H. On this link you can find the connector on the back of the Body ECU on the page marked page 24.

The terminals are 11 and 12. Term 11 should be grounded when the switch is moved to "LOCK", Term 12 should be grounded when the switch is moved to "UNLOCK". If both of those are true, then the Body ECU is bad. If they aren't, let me know and we'll dig deeper!

So I'll admit that I had already pulled the relay block before I say your post so I'm probably just going to try and replace it.
Do you know which models are compatible with my part?
Do I need the exact year / model / part number?
These are the codes on the outside of the case.

A yard I get parts from has one from a 2000 Limited but numbers dont match.

Can you shed any light or suggestions on replacing it?
Thx again.

No I don't know what the numbers mean. I do know that if your vehicle has ignition disable and the donor vehicle doesn't, it won't work. There are other issues but I'm not up to speed on all of them. If it's free, you can always try it! Also, I believe the relay INSIDE the Body ECU is what actually fails, and you could maybe swap it out, but it is soldered in place. It's been done, if you search this forum you could probably find the link.

thanks from the new guy

I just bought a 99er and this was the first problem I've found so far. I think you guys saved me a boat load of research. . .

Is it possible to install a remote starter kit that also has the unlock/lock function as well.

So basically you are bypassing it and using something else to lock and unlock from the remote?

Door locks with RS

Hey

This is easy. All aftermarket RS/security alarms come with key less entry by default.

If you have a 3rd Gen 99-2002, you will have to purchase a programmed immobilizer bypass as the key cylinder has to know your keys. Pre-99 you can rip the alarm right out and install what you need.
SCHUNTER1969 I see you are you SC. If you are in Columbia I can refer you to the shop i work at. Very quick installs and PERFECT service.

ambush

I am in Columbia, SC! And I would love a recommendation for a price quote but like most stuff on my 4runner I will probably end doing it.

My question is if you are having this ECU problem, instead of dishing out money to just repairing the issue, could I be dishing out money to an upgrade that also restores the function of my power locks?
