Preventative maintenance??

Just joined the T4R Fam, with a 1996 Toyota 4runner 4x4 that has 270k miles. Everything seems to be running great so far (minus the starter that I will be replacing this week), but what are the preventative maintenance items that should be checked and taken care of? I bought from the owners backyard mechanic who said the brakes where just done, oil was changed and fluids were topped off but wasnt sure when the time belt was last changed or anything else. I will be replacing the starter this week since that just went out on me and adjusted the rear brakes a few days ago.

Timing belt water pump thermostat. That is if it hasn't already been done and it should be done soon. I'd also look at socks and struts. As well as all of the fluids and the like. But it sounds like a gem you have pics?

I'd also look at socks and struts.

I hate having to tell my 4Runner to change its dirty socks.

guys. should he replace the flex plate? mine cracked at 320,000 rendering the truck undrivable until its fixed.

maybe preventative maitnance at those miles or just wait until it happens. because it will happen in the next 70K miles id like to bet.

Just an idea, but you might just need to replace the starter contacts instead of the entire unit. That's what I did after a couple of shops said that I needed to swap the whole part at around $300-$400, I got the parts off amazon for like $15, and it took about 3-4 hrs. Super easy to do as far as procedure, there's a few write ups around the forums somewhere.

Is there an easy way to tell if they need to be replaced??

I was able to get a new starter for under $100 and doing it myself so save the extra money, plus a Life Time warranty so figured I'd do a new one.

Pop the hood, should be a sticker with #miles when it was replaced at. Its right next to a big hose going from radiator. On a plastic cover that covers the timing belt. And then check your odometer. Timing belt should be changed every 100k. To be safe , 80-90k for me. At the same time its good to change your radiator, thermostat, spark plugs, spark plug wires, vavle cover gasket if leaking. And all your fluids.
