Price Check for used 5th Gen

Hi everyone,

I sold my 2001 Land Cruiser and am going to be buying a 2012+ 4Runner Limited (with all options) for a replacement.

I just found a 2012 Limited with:
- 7" Nav
- 15 speaker JBL system
- 3rd row
- White Pearl paint.
-37,000 Miles

The car looks like its in great shape on the outside, paint is very clean from the photos, interior is nearly perfect besides a little hole in the center console. The under carriage however looks like its probably whats to be expected from a 2012 living in the north east, but what do you guys think? too much corrosion? The hitch looks like its covered but that may just be the hitch.

The dealer wants 29,500 plus taxes so 31,350 OTD what do you guys think? I have deposit on it because its out of state and cant get there before Saturday, decent deal? This is best price deal I have seen but may need to keep looking because the undercarraige is worrying me a bit...?

Looks pretty normal for vehicles in the area. It looks like a little / private dealership. Be carful buying from those dealerships. Based on my experience and gut be wary.

Its actually the used car lot of a large Toyota dealer, so thats one reason I felt a little better with the price.

I've never understood the concern with undercarriage rust ... what do you think could happen?

Is this being sold as CPO?

That undercarriage would sway me away. I was shopping used and found a '13 Limited with similar miles in the low 30s (33k). I took it for a test drive and liked the drive but then I looked underneath and it was covered in rust. Carfax indicated it came from PA/NJ which would explain the rust.
If it wasn't for the rust, I'd be in that car now instead of my new '16 SR5. (that and my wife didn't want another silver Toyota since she has a silver Highlander*)

If you are in the NE, there's no escaping the rust on these 5th Gens. In my search, I did find more and more 12-13s for sale than any other year due to the 3 year lease.

That hole in the console looks like a cigarette burn and I would never, ever buy a vehicle that was smoked in. They can put all the DE-ionizers, smell good stuff and steam clean they want and that smell never goes away.

Then again, I would never buy a vehicle from the north east either. That rust looks way worse than what my 13 year old 4Runner did when I traded it in.

I ran a KBB in my area with standard Limited equipment in very good condition and the trade in average was in the 29-31K range.

But when you say out of state, do you mean you live in a state where they don't dump 50 million tons of salt on the roads every winter? If so, I would look there first or even from the west.

The hole definitely looks like a smoker burn so I'll be drilling them in that Wednesday when they send the detailed under carriage photos I asked for. If it was a one time smoke and it caught the cover I'd be fine with it (not as sensitive as some to the smell) But I definitely don't want a cig smokers car!

The under carriage we'lol we about when they send the photos, I live in Boston and this car is in Long Island NY so similar salt, maybe less down there. Everyone I have seen up here is fairly covered and the ones down south are hard to come by! Iv been looking in Florida where my brother lives.

I mean, ideally, you would find a rust free one, but if you live there anyway, the rust free one you find in Arizona will become a rust-full one very shortly.

I personally am not super wary of rusty frames on the 4R, there aren't failure reports like on the Tacos. You'll get some rust in your eye when you crank on a bolt, and might have to torch off a particularly stubborn bolt, but that's really the only issue you'll encounter.

Can you swing a few more thousand for a SR5 with the 3rd row? Not sure how important the auto climate control, leather seats, ventilated seats , AWD, etc is to you (if its all important, then disregard because a new limited is much more then just a few thousand) but I think you are being optimistic about a "one and done" regarding the smoke, my guess is the price is attractive because it was a smokers car which is something I would stay far away from unless turning it into a buggy or caged drag monster.

Unfortunately this will be the wife's "new car" and she wants all the little bells and whistles like NAV and leather etc.. etc.. I have looked into buying new but really wanted to keep the vehicle purchase price under 30k. there are some nice examples down south but it seems like every nice one I find is RWD only! pretty incredible they even make these in RWD.

The smoke does worry me a bit.

The ones you posted though would be 3-5k above my budget and I am really trying to stay below 30k for the vehicle price with under 40-50k. I feel like at every price point you can always spend another 5k and get exactly what you want but then all you do is look at the next 5k higher price point! need to set the limit somewhere.

Looks like a smoker's vehicle that was never washed in the winter.

Trailer butthole on mine is just patches of surface rust, not bubbling up like that. I bet the entire undercarriage looks like shit.

I'd be more worried about the smoking too.

I went to a dealer to test drive one I thought was a good deal (before I bought my current truck). I got in, almost puked, got out, then left. I wouldn't have drove that truck if they had given it to me for free. Seriously.

Personal preference for sure, but I think the pre-14 Limiteds look a lot better than the current Limiteds. Too much chrome on the new ones.

Gotcha. You hadn't mentioned budget in the first post so figured I'd shoot a couple your way. The one you posted, as someone just mentioned, has some serious bubbling on the trailer hitch. Not a good sign for the rest of the undercarriage. I can assure you that you can find a nicer one at that price point.

You've evidently never owned an older yota. Price on old cruisers sky rocket if rust free. Eventually, rust will surely eat its way on this 4Runner. Not next year. But it will.

Well guys, I made the mistake of flying down and looking at this 4runner. The piece of s*** sales person told me over and over that it was a non smoker, one whiff of the interior and it smelled like an old man who decided to stop brushing his teeth 10 years ago and only smoke Newport 100's... needless to say I flew home!

However I did just find a white 2014, 38k miles every option for 34,200, car is actually a non smoker! And is very clean inside and out. Seems like prices up in Boston are higher than elsewhere but what do you guys think of the price?

Wow, very sorry to hear that. Stories like that don't help the used car salesman stereotype.
