I recently added a 2021 TRD Pro in Lunar Rock to my 'garage' for the purpose of building my ideal Overlanding / Offroad machine. I wanted to build something unique to my interests. I have a shop where I work on my odd collection of vehicles. This adventure started with a 2018 SR5 for a base build platform, but when I had the opportunity to acquire a Lunar Rock TRD Pro I jumped at it. This thread will be updated as items come in. Happy to answer any and all questions! Some various components may have youtube install videos available.

I order parts everyday! Game plan is to do a stage 7 Icon suspension, -38 offset Stealth custom series wheels, and a load more overland recovery gear.



The 4runner is currently dead in the water, waiting on tuning support for the 2021 ECU. While it is down I am driving my white SR5 recently upgraded with TRD pro suspension :tongue:.

Sick build! Love the Lunar Rock paint. The straight cut gears are going to be noisy, but i assume you know that and are looking forward to it

With regards to tuning '20+, do you know something we don't know? I've been hearing "tuning will be available soon" for more than 6 months.. for all we know it could be a year or more before it actually is.

Well, here’s what I will say. No there is not necessarily anything I know that you don’t in regard to a tune being available. I will say that I have been working with HP Tuner and Procharger to get a solution for the 20&21’s. I’ve sent information back and forth with them. I am also working with some additional resources (I will name them if I am able to determine the validity of the claims) to be able to pull the mapping off the ECU. If HP Tuner & ATI’s tuners are not able to offer support I will have to find another solution.

That being said, I have a back up 4runner that I will drive daily until this build is complete and reliably tuned. I have plenty of parts to keep me busy and plenty more on the way as well.

Keep us posted on the tune. Probably just an editing error, but ATI website shows the kit fits a 2020. I realize 20 is a new ecu, so its a bit of a let down.

I can confirm that is an error on their end. They do not have support for anything past 2019.

You're not alone, love the sound of a Pro charged engine at idle :flame:

Interior Puppy management

My interior puppy management system or IPMS… consists of a series of molle panels that I lightly modified to work together. I do have a harness system that attaches as well (not photo’d) It is currently in my SR5 because well… the Pro is not currently driveable. The side panels and shelf were sourced from Victory 4x4 and the dog barrier is a cut down version of BPF’s dog barrier. It works great, and it does not rattle or vibrate. Highly recommend for your IPMS, also offers great storage for recovery and overlanding gear.

Good on you for taking the extra step to work with HP Tuner! You are doing a lot of us a great service. Keep the build updates coming.

9/29 Update

I visited Tom at Mule Expedition Outfitters today and picked up a healthy parts list for the build. MOST IMPORTANTLY I heard back from HP Tuners today, looks like we are going to have some tuning support. Nothing is for sure but... this looks promising... :lock1:

update 10/1

HP Tuners has my ECU and the engineers are working on getting my ECU flashed. ATI / Procharger is very excited, because by all indications tuning support for the 20-21 4runners is here. I am holding out on saying that tuning support is available until I receive a tuned ECU back.

In the meantime. I finished up (mostly) a tandem ARB twin compressor / switch pro install. I also have started the Victory 4x4 rock slider install. Ill upload photos of those projects. The switch pro install was a little more complicated than usual and require some brackets to be made to hold it in place above the fuse box. I flipped the slee bracket bracket around and made some basic mounts. This allowed me to mount both the switch pro and twin compressor. Due to the procharger install requiring a relocation of the battery to the passenger I had no other space to put the switch pro.

I have some big plans for the onboard air system. I am excited to share that soon! Big things coming for the Lun4r build!

I did the procharger install in my shop. HP Tuners is the company that ATI uses to communicate with the ECU and flash the tune onto the ECU. There is currently no available support for reading or flashing the 20-21 4runner ECU's. This will be, to my knowledge the first tuned 20-21 4runner.

I’m choosing to read between the lines on this one. Taking it as a yes, first one. No, no commercially available tune.

I come upon this conclusion based on the ill effects that would come from driving a vehicle after having added a supercharger, but no tune.

I hope that OP would not want to go through the wait (again) for a TRD Pro allocation.
