So I decided to take matters into my own hands and pick up an $8 metal file at Home Depot. So far, I've managed to shave down enough of one corner that the shank fits in easily about halfway as far as it needs to, so it's just going to take a little more time and elbow grease shaving down the rest. But at least the issue will be solved.
It's weird because the shank fits in and out very easily into the receiver of a Nissan Frontier that I happen to be driving today. And, like I said before, other 2" shanks fit easily into the 4Runner. So it's not like I can look at one company or the other (Toyota vs. Equal-i-zer) and cry foul. I guess some sort of variance is inevitable.
