Hey everyone super new guy here! I looked at a 97 T4r today with 135k and everything looked to be in order. I tested the 4wd and it worked great at first and shifts fine into and out of 4lo. At one point, though, I went to shift back into 2wd and the T case just wouldn't go. Tried it in park, neutral, drive, everything, and no dice. I told the guy if he figured it out to call me.
He called me back later and said he talked to "his guy" and he said to put it in reverse and then neutral or some such combo and it is now successfully back in 2wd.
My questions are thus: What could potentially be causing this? I know you should be able to go freely from 2wd to 4hi even while in drive. How much is this the potential worst case cost to fix this? Even if it cost me $800 for a new transfer case the truck is so cheap it would still be a good deal.
I know this may be tough to provide an opinion on cause the car isn't here in front of me but the thing is a pretty smoking deal and wanted to get some quick opinions in the interest of jumping on a good deal or passing up a giant mess.
