Problem starting..steering wheel lock?

Hi...my 96 Blurple 4runner is having trouble starting...seems if i turn the steering wheel, and find the right angle..it will start. Otherwise, it just clicks until i move the wheel around. Its getting worse. Whats wrong?

The steering wheel position is probably just coincidence - your starter contacts may need to be replaced. See this thread:

the guy at auto zone said it was the alternator? Does that sound right?

Could be the alternator. Did the auto zone guy also test your battery? He can also test your starter. Are there any other strange symptoms?

I remember one of my friend also told me the starter is linked to his steering wheel and as he turns it into a certain position he can start the engine. Strange.

Your starter contacts are wearing out. I am not a good fan of Autozone (try NAPA for good parts) You can buy contacts on ebay for like $15 shipped.

the guy at the store tested the battery twice, cuz he couldn't believe that a two year old battery held that much of a charge. I suspected starter..tapped on it and it worked...so i got a remanufactured one for 100..swapped it out, and everything is good. I went to advance auto parts, as they are close and open late...thanks for help
