Problem: T4R running badly after car wash, please help

Resistance was well within spec. The voltage test requires connecting the MAF and turning the ignition to ON. Then, while the test probes are in the +/- leads on the connector, blow on the MAF and check to see if the voltage changes.

Well, it was changing, bot not by much, and always going down in voltage. Any clues here?

In the meantime, I got the rest of the plugs out and replaced all the plugs with OEM Denso. I then replaced the crappy aftermarket wireset that was on there with a nice OEM Sumitomo set.

But, I don't want to start this thing up if the bad mixture is just going to foul these new shiny plugs!

And I don't want to replace the MAF unless I KNOW it's bad. Anything else in this "circuit" I can check?

Thanks for your help.

ive got a good MAF lying around here that was in my 01. its good the only problem is is that the little screws are stripped pretty bad. i duno if you can get them out. While installing my intake i had to cut the stock intake to get it out than i had to buy i new MAF. that sucked. :xnuts: let me know if your interested and we can work something out.

So your old MAF is stuck in the airbox outlet tube? I'd think the screws could just be drilled out with a dremel or something, no?

I'm interested if the price is right. I need the truck running by next Tuesday (one week).

I'm just not convinced that the MAF is the problem, given that the P0100 code isn't very specific.

Let me know what you want for your old MAF (and shipping).

Thanks!

ill take a pic of it tonight to show you, i dont want you to spend your money if it wont work, ill sell i for it cheap if it works out, let me look up shipping. but ya there are 2 screws in the corners of the square part of the MAF and the heads Of the screws are stripped. you may be able to dremel them out, i kinds gave up, so i cut it out (the pipe) to see if i can twist the screws from the bottom and they actually go into a solid brass or some kind of metal. but ya ill post some pics tonight when i get home from work. and you can tell me what ya think.

sounds great, thanks!
Any chance your air filter element got soaked in the car wash? That would really cut down on air flow and give you a rich mixture. Anyway it's worth checking.

I guess it's possible, but the intake is all stock, so I doubt it.

By the way it just happened like someone flipped a switch, it seems more likely to be electrical.

sorry i didn't really know where else to post these but here are the pics of the MAF i have.

Thanks gotta,

I may not need it after all. I have a new/used ECM on the way. If that doesn't work, I'm back to the MAF or system grounds. If that's the case, I'll holler at you. Thanks for taking the time to shoot pics!

your welcome, ya just let me know hopefully the ECM fixes it . id be goin nuts if my runner was doin that. i just gotta stay away from those automatic car washes! lol

Sorta related

Saw the pictures of the airflow sensor with the stripped screws. I posted a replacement part number a few years ago but found it again. I had the same issue and used a dremel to notch the screw and get it out. I then found the best replacement at Home Depot Part number 30699-82558 which is a 4mmx10mm cap screw with socket head. The socket head allows you to use an Allen wrench in the future and eliminates stripping. I love Toyota but they probably saved five cents with the soft screws they used on this sensor.

Yes, turned out to be the ECM. During car washes (the touch-free kind with the high-pressure water), the seal around the windshield would leak right at the bottom. Water then traveled down the defrost vent and dripped directly on to the ECM and main harness. Not cool!

I bought a used ECM on ebay for $150, then had a mobile locksmith come out to flash the ECM so I could program my transponder keys to it. Worked great!

The only code I was getting was a P0100, which is kind of a generic MAF code. But, my MAF was just fine.

Good luck!
