Problem with Crux VIM after Takata fix.

In 2017 I installed a Crux Interfacing VIMTY-05 Vim Activation unit on my 2015 Trail with factory head unit with NAV, non, JBL. It has worked flawlessly since then and allowed Vehicle In Motion (VIM) override for features of the head unit by pressing the "Enter" button in the steering wheel audio control switch.

Fast forward to 2019 and the Takata airbag recall and fix. Since the airbag replacement, the VIM still works however when selected, the parking brake symbol and the error (!) symbol both come on along with the error beeping. To turn off the beeping and idiot lights I have to turn off VIM then all is back to normal.

Now the service rep mentioned they use techstream as part of the procedure in replacing the airbag so could that mean a possible ECU SW update that causes the Crux unit to not work correctly any longer? If so, why does the system think the parking brake is engaged when VIM override is enabled?

I pulled the head unit out to make sure the Crux unit was still connected correctly and it was. I also checked all the wiring for the parking brake sensor and it looked good so I am at a loss as to what the issue is.

I also contacted Crux support and have not seen a reply yet. Any thoughts?

I got curious and looked up the installation instructions, and Step 1 specifically states, "DO NOT disconnect the airbag connector” with no explanation to what will happen if you do. Although I don’t have any direct experience with the Crux interface, I would bet that that is relevant to your problem.

If I were you, I would disconnect the Crux harness entirely and return to stock (leave the battery disconnected long enough for the ECU to reset). Make sure everything works properly, then reconnect the Crux (without unplugging the airbag connector as per the instructions).

1. Remove the factory radio from the dashboard.
Note: DO NOT disconnect the airbag connector.
2. Remove the factory connectors from behind the factory radio.
3. Mate the T-Harness connections to the factory connectors. (Make sure all connectors are properly seated into the interface and into the radio.) (JBL Radios see page 3)
4. Connect the Orange/White wire to your corresponding SWC type. (9-Button or 5-Button)
5. Connect the audio or video source to the female RCAs on the VIMTY-05 T-Harness.
6. Switch to the new AV input by using the SWC or the radio.(See page 3)7. Test the interface and re-install the radio into the dash.

Thanks!! I will give that a shot. Outstanding catch.

I really enjoy this forum. What a wealth of knowledge and information amongst its members.

Well back to square one. Disconnecting everything overnight did not resolve the issue. Will try to call the Crux support folks next.
