Problem with speedo cable install.....

Toyota put the wrong part in the right bag, uuuuuugh. I knew something was up when I had struggled for a bit getting it to attach to the cluster. Finally mic-ed the ends of the old and new that meet at the cluster, inner diameter of ends, original 16.00mm, new part 19.00mm. Gee, no wonder the thing does not clip on properly. Now I'll have to pull out the new one and wait for another.
On the bright side, I'm getting pretty adept at installing these now. It should only take me 30 minutes to reinstall new/er one. Thanks Toyota for probably hiring a completely uneducated twit to handle parts at your national distribution center(ie labeled parts improperly).

I had the same lbaeling issue with some front anti-sway bar bushings. Toyota keep giving me 18mm while the old one was marked 21 mm. same part numbers took them three tries to deliver my correct parts.

I'm hoping the new part will look like the one in the pick, albeit a tad cleaner.

Toyota Dealer in Kansas gave up, said they can't get one. Anybody have any solutions?

Update: local dealer has special ordered the original part#. So, we'll see what that looks like when it arrives. For those out there, the original speedo cable part# 83710-89190. This one is coming from the east coast. My fingers are crossed, just shows the parts for these truck are disappearing.

The parts guy said it should be in Thursday. Unfortunately, I have to go away and won't be able to tackle it until next weekend. I'm really hoping it's the right one. If it is not the right one, I might try in Canada to get one, or Japan directly.

Update: Dealer ordered "old" part# 83710-89190 came in with the same large plastic end as the new part# 83710-35490 cable(large white plastic end). Well, another failure, but the guys from the local dealer tried to help me out.
The updated speedo head from Toyota is $320, which I'm not going that route. Warning out there, people who have the old style speedo head, your going to have a lot of issues trying to find a new cable that works. I'm hoping to find someone who has bought up a dealer's NOS and has one on the shelf for sale.
I'm going to re-grease the old cable and call it a day for now. The parts break is the mid production in 1990. So, if your vehicle is built early 1990 and back, it typically need the metal end in the pics. This is the end that is difficult to find(ie 16mm inner diameter). The vehicles built after, have the different speedo head that takes the 19mm large white plastic end(ie part# 83710-35490). All of this discussion refers to an automatic V6 truck(the others differ). Hope this helps others.

Check and see if you have the speedo head end(see pic) that is the early type. Measure the length of your cable, as this matters, and check the flange assembly at the floor board(ie where the cable goes through the chassis).

Update: I've removed the speedo cable internals and lubed them up. Used 3M engine assembly paste and Mobil 1 synthetic grease. Hoping for success here, fingers crossed.

In an attempt to obtain a new working cable for the future(so we know how fast we're going?), I called Toyota's national customer help line(1-800-331-4331). What a waste of time and a useless entity. The rep was so obfuscative and hostile, I thought I was in municipal court. The rep did not want me mentioning or documenting specifics? It is no wonder Toyota is having issues. I did not expect this response at all. I think I'll raise it to a national rep level. Hope this helps others so they know what to expect.

So i finally had the time to start back on my truck now that finals are done for this semester.. i ended up pulling my speedo cable out it looks like it was still fine up by the speedometer but at the other end where it connects it almost looks like the part that threads on is loose and such... so for now till i can pull off another cable from a different 4 runner ill go without a speedometer.. theres always a trusty gps app to watch your speeds ha. if i were you it might be easier to go to some junk yards and pull a speedo cable from a old 4 runner close to the same years as yours.. sounds like Toyota is having trouble finding the right parts for you. sorry man.

The local dealer is going to bat for me with a regional rep, fingers crossed. Our truck is too nice to let some part like this slide. Thanks though. There are a couple options:
1) keep hounding Toyota at the upper levels, they could probably have one from Japan in a day(if, they made a call or email).
2) convert the speedo head to the newer style. Expensive, as the dealer quoted me $315 for the part(consider another $100 for the new style cable-pt# 83710-35490).
3) Find a shop to rebuild the cable. I've looked, and there don't seem to be many of these around.
4)modify the flange at the floor to accept another style cable(ie manual trans or land cruiser FJ62 or the like)
I thought about getting one out of a yard, or from someone breaking one up for parts, most are shot though. Most trucks in yards have triple the miles on them our truck has. If I find one cheap enough I might give it a go. For all the aggravation of installation, I would personally rather have a more permanent workable solution. Thanks for the note, I'll keep you guys updated.

Here we go again for the second time:

I have been instructed that this is the fix needed. It "looks" like this new speedo head will fit our cluster, fingers crossed. Looks like our truck will be "reborn" with 1 mile. It would be nice if it was summertime, the garage is a tad chilly.

Review: Success! The parts are installed. It does take a bit to pull the cluster, and clean everything up. For those taking on this task, I would recommend cleaning out the HVAC ducts while in there. Now, with the new speedo head and cable, the truck is as quiet as can be. Lord, that old cable was noisy. It is amazing how civilized the truck feels now.
It is easier installing the speedo cable with two people, so getting it over the trans is not so bad.
Parts:
1) 83110-35770 , speedometer assembly, List $219.74
2) 83710-89190 , cable assembly, speedometer, List $91.00

Hopefully this will help others out there avoid the aggravation I had to go through. I'm still not too crazy about the fact Toyota makes you buy a new speedo head to allow you to know how fast your going, or the fact they have stopped producing the proper cable for the truck. Well, it is what it is. FYI, there are only a few of those speedo heads left in the warehouse in all of North America! Have a good Holiday all.

So how did you get the guts out of the cable to grease it and did it help any?

I just pulled both ends of mine and the cable insert is captive in some way.

I suspect if I could get it out and give it a good lubing it would at least help a little.

The cable pulls right out from the trans side(large end). Lubing it was a complete failure though, made it worse. Sorry. It's really the casing that is shot on these. The resistence on the old and new cable(when turning it) seemed about the same, except the new one is dead silent.
I've had similar experience with older German cars, when the cable starts to make noise, it's time for replacement. The one on our truck did go about 100k. For people with the newer style speedo head, it's a pretty inexpensive fix(ie just cable).
Just a note, I think our old cable was, or had the MPG and speeds way off. If your speedo is bouncing, you might not know the correct speed your going. For reference, here is a pic of the new style speedo head:

I guess I'll just bite the bullet and order the new cable.

How goofy is this though.... the actual Toyota web site has a page for "parts" but you can't really order anything there or if you can it's only particular things.

Guess they want to get you into the dealer for some reason.

I've found a few online parts vendors so I'll probably try that first.
