problems with autoshift

I think that's normal. What it's doing is limiting you to 4th gear and it won't go into overdrive - 5th. When you start up it will go through 1 to 4. If you pull it back a two times to 2, then it will start in 1, upshift to 2 and stay in 2. I used that last week at some sand dunes to have it not go above 2 or 3. This was handy when in 4 low.

I guess mine's not normal. It shifts down to 4th when traveling at normal hwy speeds but can also stay in first, second, or third depending on current gear.

Edit: But the display always starts at 4 when shifting to "S"

Normal. It acts as an 'old school' overdrive when you drop it into S mode. From there you can put it it whatever gear you want (as long as the engine will not over rev, if it knows it will the computer will beep at you and say 'no, no, no'.) If you push it hard enough it will shift up to the next gear to prevent over rev as well.

idk about you guys but when in shift mode mine starts at 4 but i can go up to 5 if i want all the gears are available

it doesnt limit me to 4th it starts in 4th until i manually shift it to the gear i want even at a full stop it starts in 4th
i am also getting 14 mpg city hywy combined i cant help but think something is up with my 4runner

If your truck was starting in 4th gear from a dead stop, well, I doubt it would even be able to move.

The display may say 4th gear, but that indicates the highest gear the tranny will shift up into, not necessarily the gear you are currently using.

In other words, display shows 4th gear. From a stop the tranny will shift 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th but will not go into 5th.
