Prodigy RF brake controller

I do not yet own a 4Runner but am considering purchasing a new 2012. Before I commit to buying one I want to try one out to see how it will tow my 3900 lb travel trailer. I will be renting one from a dealer for a day and towing my trailer to test it. I am concerned about towing without a brake controller so I am considering getting a Prodigy RF that doesn't need to be installed in the tow vehicle. I can then use it in whatever tow vehicle that I end up buying. Has anyone used the Prodigy RF in a 2012 4Runner? Will it work with no changes being made to the 4Runner?

No experience myself but I looked on Amazon and 5 out of 5 gave it a 5 star.

You could also accomplish the same thing with the Prodigy II....it's simply plug and play, multi-directional, with the supplied connector in the glove box (if the truck is a new unit) should be a piece of cake to wire in (attach the plug and a ground wire, zip tie it to something solid.


I tow 2600lbs, 400lbs tongue weight, use the Prodigy II with no problems, and there's lots of others that tow the range you're talking about.

I use a takonsha p3 brake controller on my 2011 SR5. I tow a 4800# travel trailer. You will need a WDH too.

Thanks for the responses. Some of the other Prodigies are cheaper but since I don't know what is included with the rental that I'm getting, I went ahead and ordered the RF.

I will definitely be using a WD hitch. I currently use one when I tow with my F150.
