Programming Instructions for keyless entry remote?

This key fob programming works on my 2001 4runner

I've modified the original instructions a little bit in CAPS to make the programming work for my situation. You should be able to complete the programming if you're using a working key fob.

1. Start with the following conditions:
a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Driver door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other doors not a concern)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out QUICKLY.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (STARTS WITH LOCK THEN UNLOCK As 1 CYCLE(REPEAT 5x) AT ABOUT 1sec INTERVAL BETWEEN EACH CYCLE. IF YOUR ACTUATOR DOESN'T CYCLE THE LOCK/UNLOCK PROPERLY, STICK THE CAR KEY IN THE KEY-HOLE OUTSIDE OF THE DRIVER DOOR TO CYCLE THE LOCK/UNLOCK 5x. THE HORN SHOULD CHIRP THRU EACH CYCLE.

b. Close, then open the drivers door QUICKLY.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as STEP 3A ABOVE).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF (FAIRLY QUICK)
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF (FAIRLY QUICK).. SOMETIMES U MIGHT NEED ONLY 1 IGNITION CYCLE (STEP 4B ONLY), SKIP THIS STEP (4C)
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle LOCK/UNLOCK 2x (automatically)indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle AUTOMATICALLY at this point SINCE U HAVE NOT ACTIVATED THE PROGRAMMING MODE.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.
b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming [THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! LOCK/UNLOCK 1x = SUCCESSFUL, BUT 2x = NOT SUCCESSFUL]. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted. [YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PROGRAM THE REMOTE SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT WORKS (STEP 6A-6B). PAY ATTENTION TO 1x vs. 2x LOCK/UNLOCK AUTOMATIC CYCLE BY THE CAR TO DETERMINED WHETHER YOUR REMOTE WAS ACCEPTED OR SUCCESSFULLY PROGRAMMED]
c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. [YOU CAN PROGRAM MORE THAN 1 REMOTE WHILE THE CAR IS IN PROGRAMMING MODE]
7. Close the driver door WILL LEAVE THE PROGRAMMING MODE BUT THE VEHICLE MIGHT SET OFF THE ALARM. STICK THE KEY INTO THE DRIVER DOOR KEY HOLE & TURN TO RESET THE ALARM. TEST YOUR NEWLY PROGRAMMED KEY FOB AT THIS POINT WITH ALL DOORS CLOSED.
 
Just wanted to chime in - I too (as some of the previous posters) had to clear all codes (5 ignition on/offs) first, before this would work. I probably tried about 10 or 12 times in different sequences before it eventually worked.

Advanced programming?

Does anyone know if there are any advanced options available for the key fob?? My brother has a 5th gen, and has the ability to press and hold to roll ALL windows down. I would love that option on my 2001, and/or the option to roll the rear window UP after using the fob to roll it down. I use my runner for camping and tailgate style activities that I use my rear window for often. Any input is greatly appreciated!!
 
I have 2 FOBS, one that came with the 4runner and one that I bought, both FCC ID HYQ1512Y. The one that came with the 4runner has a window button on bottom, the one I bought has a trunk button.

I cleared the codes with the 5 turn, the redid it with the 1 turn which should add fobs. I was able to add the original FOB no problem, but the one I bought with the trunk button keeps on giving me 2 lock cycles and will not accept programming.

Is it a bad FOB do you think?

Still... doesn't work

Replaced batteries in two remotes.

Followed instructions e-x-a-c-t-l-y. Does not program.

Variations tried:
- ignition on/off 1 time, 2 times, 5 times.

If all instances I can get to step #5.

However, in step 6b the locks cycle twice (x2). Not x0 or x1. Only x2. Both remotes. At least it is consistent, however, it is consistently failing. Any suggestions? After about 40 tries of all variations on theme the effort is approaching the extreme frustration stage.

Should have more accurately noted that I can get THROUGH step #5. When proceeding through step #6, step "b", the locks are supposed to cycle once. They cycle twice.

Argh.
 
Tried it again... as usual, the to-be-programmed remote gave the two cycles. I just re-did the lock/unlock then lock sequence on the remote again... (two cycles)... again... (two cycles) and again (one cycle). One cycle ???? Yes, 4 times, same remote, over and over. Eventually it "took". Regardless, it now appears functional but I continue to hold my breath.

Does this allow you to roll down your rear glass as well or do i need to program it a different way to roll down glass? i tried it today and it worked to lock and unlock but the rear glass button didnt work. any ideas?

Did you hold the rear window button for a few seconds? It doesn't roll on just a press.
 
How it went on my 97 Toyota 4 Runner, remote reprogram process

Since this thread was so helpful to me, I feel the need to post what I did.
It's similar to what has been posted previously, but not exactly.

  1. Situation: Broken 1997 Toyota 4Runner Remote, need to reprogram.
  2. Purchased: Two OEM Toyota Remotes from the 'Stealer' (Dealer). ($89 each, but I wasn't trusting enough to go with eBay.)
  3. Part No.: PT398-07100, they are black and not the same egg shape as my original, but the dude at Toyota said they'd work. (Black with 2 buttons, one with a nipple/nub) My original was BLACK.
  4. I used the information provided earlier in this thread:
  5. Locate ECU (Engine Control Unit) under the seat, I had to undo the black zip tie to get to it, but it didn't need to be cut, just press the ziptie button. ECU is about 4" X 5" X 1" and has a couple (maybe 3, but I think I only saw 2) connectors.
  6. For the next step, I read that I had to have the doors closed for it to work, which made it quite comical to manipulate myself so that both hands were free and I wasn't stuck until my wife came home.
  7. Stick the key into the ignition cylinder of the Toyota 4-Runner and turn it to the "On" ignition position (NOT AUX). Use the tip of a ballpoint pen or optical-sized flathead screwdriver (I used a large paperclip) to press and hold the depressed green programming button for three seconds. Supposedly: Note that the status monitor display in the 4-Runner will light up if you have completed this step successfully; the status monitor is the red LED light located on the vehicle's dash. NOTE: But I don't have a 'Status Monitor' display, nor did I hear a beep, and call me crazy but after getting FULLY wedged into position to do this, I wasn't able to see the lights flash, I had to trust that it was working.
  8. Press and release the top (one with the nub (nipple?) button on your keyless entry remote. Note that the red LED status monitor will turn off (didn't notice because I was FULLY wedged in and I don't think I have a 'status monitor LED on the dash), a chime will sound (not for me) and the 4-Runner's exterior lights will flash (no clue if this happened, I was wedged into the vehicle) if the keyless entry remote has been successfully programmed to your vehicle.
  9. Trust it, it worked.
  10. To check, turn OFF the ignition and try the remote.
  11. I programmed 2 remotes in a matter of 5 minutes total including wedging myself into/out of position under the steering column and across the front seats.

Please let me repeat... these are NOT my directions, I copied/pasted from earlier in the thread.
And, my additions above were specific to my 1997 Toyota 4 Runner with a factory installed Door Lock System (and no alarm, obviously, since I didn't hear a chirp).

Thanks again to the numerous folks who commented on this thread in the past, I just saved $50 from the 'Stealer' plus tax!
Hopefully your programming will go as easily as mine!
 
For my 97 4runner, you can just insert a pin into the side of the security box under the driver seat and it presses a button. Once that button is pressed it puts it in programming mode and you just press a button on the FOB to program it.

Did you need the Key in the ignition, turned to 'ON'?
I didn't try that, but maybe it's even easier than I thought.

I'm just happy to have this DONE!
Now onto replacing some worn out parts.

Oh yeah forgot to say that, key was ON in the ignition, I'm guessing to activate battery power. Then put the pin into the pin hole on the side of the security box, then you will see your security light start blinking for 5 seconds. Within that 5 seconds, just press a button on your FOB.

Gotcha, I think we're essentially saying the same thing, your description is a LOT less wordy.

Mine didn't have a security light. 1997 SR5 V6, NOT Limited.
 
Bought an 02 limited without a fob. I got the eBay 1512y 1 month later.

Following the procedure and Manually operating the locks while using the switch worked for me to rewrite the first fob. I'll try adding the spare tomorrow.
