Programming Instructions for keyless entry remote?

I have an 02 Sport edition, and as far as I know, no alarm. I bought a replacement fob on ebay because I thought I lose my keys. From what I read here, I took the chance and ordered what I thought was the right remote, a HYQ12BAN. Well, lucky me found my keys and the original working remote is HYQ1512Y. Does anyone know if you can have two different remotes programmed to work? Or do I need to return the one and get the same code?

The dealer did mine for free in about 30 seconds just say you ordered it from Toyota and could figure out the instructions. The sales guy knew it by heart

Yes my friend it helped me. I came across your post and saw that you had to go to 5 cycles of the ignition to get into option 5 of the programming mode in order to clear out all of the memory and then start over by going back into option one.

I tried everything and this is what did it for me. I first entered the programming mode by going to option 5 ( cycling the ignition 5 times ) then I started over again and when I enetred the programming mode I only cycled the key once. Once I was in that first mode I did the button clicking on the remote and it worked perfectly. It took them both, one right after the other.

I think the biggest thing here is that people need to be aware that how many times you turn the ignition before you remove it determines what mode you are in. I am not sure the exact differences between these modes except for what was listed but doing option 2 ( turning ignition twice ) did not work for me. Either way, my Runner is happy and so am I! Now I will go drink a bottle of Anchor Steam or maybe a Shiner Bock and walk around with my chest puffed out! LOL

This dude saved my freakin butt!!! I thought I was smoking crack. I kept trying to do the 2 turn key, then got the 5 turn key to work like a dozen times (the only reason I kept doing the 5 turn key was to see what my rhythm should be). I couldn't get the 2 turn key to work to save my freakin life, then I tried the 1 turn key a few times and it worked!!!

Awesome thread! My 2002 4Runner SR5 that I purchased a couple of days ago came with no remotes :moping: , no master key either :nono: , but whatever I got a great deal on the truck!

A couple of remotes are on the way that I purchased off fleaBay. After reading this entire thread, my game plan will be to use the turn ignition X5 method in Step 4 (b) to clear out all codes. Then I plan to run the entire process, step 1-7, using the turn ignition X1 method in step 4 (b).

I also purchase a fresh pair of CR2016/DL2016 batteries, one less thing I need to worry about when troubleshooting.

Hmmm...I also have fresh CR2032 batteries that are a bit thicker but put out the same 3V, anyone try to fit those in their remote for the longer life?

I'll report my findings on the programming. Thanks gang for the support!

Happy to report that the game plan from my last post worked!!! My remotes work great, I'm so happy!

A couple of notes: I don't have a master key and verified I can do the programming with a sub key. I have a 2002 SR5 with NO factory alarm.

This thread saved me a bunch of money by giving me the info I needed to do it all myself rather than paying a dealership that would just empty my pockets!

I just got a replacement FOB for my 1996 4runner. I could not find info in here or anywhere on how to do it. Took a little more searching then wanting but I found it on google and should work on a 1997 also.

All you have to do is locate the black box under the drivers seat. There is a security light on the center console near the rear window button.

1. Insert ignition key into the car and turn on too aux. Furthest without cranking.

2. Press the side button on the box under drivers seat for 3 seconds with a pen or small object (not 5 sec) till the security light is solid on the center console. If you wait 5 seconds it will blink and not work.

3. Press and hold the button on your FOB for about 1 second within the first 5 seconds of the security light going solid. You will hear a beep and or lights flash and the FOB is now programed.

4. Remove key, close doors and test FOB. On these models the FOB will not work when any door is open.

Do I have to get a new remote or can I get a used one (ie one programmed to another vehicle) and reprogram it.

My case broke the other day and cant put the remote on a ring anymore.

New to the forum but I would appreciate any help!. I have tried both sequences for reprogramming my key fob. The key in twice, door open twice works to get it into programming mode but when I hit the lock and unlock buttons and then lock button nothing happens. I have two remotes..one that came from the owner but only the lock button works and another from eBay? Any suggestions.. I am on a mission to not pay the dealer!!

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast.

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

Sorry if this has already been asked... but does this work on any keyless remote or just the factory remote (if there was one)?

I have a no name key fob with lock/unlock (1 button for both), an aux button, and a remote start button. Only the remote start works - how can I program this? If I turn the ignition five times, will I lose the configuration for the remote start?

Thought you guys might be interested, there is a website that has the programing instructions for 1998 through 2008 T4R's (not to mention a ton of other makes and models).

I had a dead remote and ordered a new one off ebay and used this website.

Also, keep in mind that I was told by the Dealer that the FCC number on the back of the replacement remote has to match the one programmed to the vehicle originally or it won't work. I don't know if that's just a scare tactic to get me to spend $135 on a new remote (which I didn't do), but that's what they said.

You can get used, just make sure it has the same FCC ID from the back of the original remote. Also, clear all the programed remotes from the vehicle memory before programing.

Does the replacement remotes share the same FCC ID as the original? (Back of the remote)

Have you tried clearing the memory before programing?

My door lock actuator was acting up after about the fourth cycle. So I then started over by using the manual lock on the drivers door. And then help it when it responded.

Hope this help some of you guys out.

Man I am so glad I found this thread, this site and YOU GUYS!! I just programmed my 2000 Limited and it was a breeze! I first did the 5x and I manually helped the lock as I cycled the lock/unlock switch. Immediately the locks automatically cycled 5x's afterwards. I held the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter (remote) simultaneously and then hit the lock button for a second and nothing happened. I then went thru the process again but only did the ignition 2x's, and voila! It worked! I just wanna say thanks to everyone for their valuable input! :cheers:

Reprogram Remote - Weak Locks (lock actuator)

I followed the directions below at least 50 times without success and decided to take it to a Toyota dealership. The dealership informed me that the lock actuator in my 2000 4 runner was going out which inhibited the locks from moving throughout the entire reprogramming cycle (weak locks). Luckily the gentleman helping me informed me of a trick.

Follow the directions below, but while locking/unlocking the vehicle with the automatic switch simultaneously lock/unlock the driver's side door manually by pushing/pulling the lock down/up.

Using this trick while following the directions below worked the first time for me. Best of luck.

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition

c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

Remote Programming Problem

I have a 2001 4Runner LTD with a dealer-installed alarm (horn and lights not siren). I'm trying to program new key fobs and used the instructions here. The instructions provided by mhsnatt18 were identical to those from the fob vendor. When I get to step 5, the power locks do not cycle themselves. I've tried several different procedures I've seen. Please, please help me with the right one. Thanks in advance.
