Programming Instructions for keyless entry remote?

2000 SR5 here....just bought the car and it has the keyless entry module so I bought 2 fobs off Amazon (KeylessOption). Been trying all of the suggestions in this thread but can't seem to get the car into programming mode. The locks do struggle to go up and down on the second time through the sequence. I tried manually helping them and couldn't get it to work either.

Does anyone know if any of the other locks are not going up and down during the sequence if that matters? Sometimes some of the others stick as well.

Also tried to complete the lock/unlock using the key in the driver door. However, my key will only unlock the car and if I turn it the other way to lock the car nothing happens. Not sure if that indicates another problem that could be causing an issue.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Because of the post limit, i can't yet make a new thread, so i hope this doesn't get lost in here. I have a 99 limited. I am trying to find out if i can change the automatic locks. Currently, they lock when you turn the key on/off. Can this be changed to shifting from park/drive?

Electric locks will not work with key out of ignition

I have a 1999 4runner I bought without remote fobs. I purchased a remote and am trying to program it. I have followed the instructions in this thread but cannot get the computer into program mode. The locks will not cycle unless the key is turned on. I had to replace the rear door and I don't know if this has anything to do with it. Any suggestions?
BTW I have the original factory sticker and it states the vehicle has remote keyless entry as an option.

I ordered keys from eBay from a seller called sanlongparts, item titled “2 New Replacement Keyless Entry Remote Key Fob for HYQ12BAN HYQ12BBX HYQ1512Y”

The keys look like this:


I tried the original instructions many times without luck.

Then, I tried using a key in the driver’s door to manually cycle the locks, due to weak actuators. In step 4, i turned the key 2x.

Worked like a charm!:cheers:

1998 4Runner SR5 remote replacement

Hello Everyone,

My X-GF ran off with my spare remote and she is too lazy to locate it. FCC ID is BAB237131-022 and it's the Gray one RS3000 Factory install.

A more modern replacement such as one on ebay shows FCC ID of BAB237131-056. It's a bit expensive at $75 and the older Factory grey ones are all used up looking.


Here's my question: Would one like this work then?

Here's the ebay link that gives me hope that the FCC ID BAB237131-056 might work with my RS3000 on FCC ID BAB237131-022 (gray) on my 1998 4Runner.

It says it will work and shows the 056 number on the back.

I guess all I can do is try with one of the cheaper 056 versions since I am not wanting to spend $75 on this one that says it will work...

With factory alarm you need fob with FCC ID: HYQ1512Y

The link to the instructions that I posted worked for HYQ12BBX.

These instructions worked on my 99 with factory alarm (RS 3000+). You do need the FCC ID: HYQ1512Y

Just to add to this awesome thread...there are very cheap alternatives to getting a remote from the dealership, not to mention the $125 programming charge they quoted me

I got a $20 replacement from remotesremotes.com! Programming it wasn't quite as straightforward for me though due to the lock actuators in my doors being a little weak. I tried over and over but was finally able to get my remote programmed by following the directions at the beginning of this forum, with one modification. Instead of cycling the lock/unlock button, I just used the key in the driver's door to lock then unlock the door for 5 cycles just like the directions state. Again, instead of pushing the button, I just used the key to lock/unlock the drivers door following the other directions exactly. It worked perfectly for my weak actuators!

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to add something to this thread.

I had purchased an additional fob for my 2000 Limited. The original that came with it was the HYQ12BAN. I went through the steps and ensured I was in the programming mode and erased the original codes via turning the key on and off 5 times. After doing so however, neither of the remotes would pair no matter which programming mode I entered. I went out and bought new batteries for the remotes and also disconnected the main battery for 15 minutes. Still nothing. I thought at this point I would have to go to the stealership. Frustrated, I entered the #2 programming mode and instead of pressing both the Lock and Unlock buttons on the remote followed by the Lock button, I kept repeatedly pressing both buttons simultaneously in about 1 second intervals. To my surprise, my 4runner accepted the fob. I thought I was crazy so I tried it with the other fob and sure enough, it accepted that one as well. :dancin:

So if anyone is having as much trouble as I was, try pressing the Lock and Unlock buttons together repeatedly, it just might work. Cheers.

I know this is in the 3rd gen but I just need help. Bought a 2008 with no key fob, bought a replacement and when I try to program the remote the locks cycle twice every time. I've even tried the different programming modes to wipe the memory and nothing works. It just cycles twice after I attempt to program the remote. Any ideas? Bad remote?

Mine came with one original key fob which still worked but was pretty worn. I got a new one from remotes.com. Followed instructions and it works perfect. At that point then the original did not. So I tried to program the original. That worked but then not the new one!? Have tried now multiple times and can program ONE OR THE OTHER but NOT BOTH!? Any ideas? Wanted both programmed so I had a backup.

It seems like you are programing one and then restarting the programing process to program the other.

I'm pretty sure you need to program them both at the same time during one programing session...I think you can do multiple fobs at once.

Sounds like you are programing one and erasing the other.

VW blade key fob

Anybody using the VW blade key fob but for a 4runner? I saw a guy on the 4th gen forum use one for his car but I would love to use one on my 3rd gen. I just want to make sure it has been done before.

EDIT: I just want to know if anyone has done this and actually had good luck with the key fob quality and lifetime. I know there are some posts on here about different ones but I wanted to know if anyone would recommend a certain flip key fob model to the rest of the 3rd gen folks?

Thanks Jroc. I will look into the compatibility with the third gen. I currently have a remote start fob but I am ditching that because it is taking a poop in its old age. My factory key fob looks exactly like yours. I will look up the FCC ID# this weekend when I can find it.

EDIT: on the ebay link 3rd gens are not compatible with this fob. Will keep investigating because I would love to use this fob on my 2002 T4R.

You are right, the ebay link is only for 4th gens. But, that seller has a whole bunch of different types of fobs for many types of vehicles. He has also told one or two of us that he can make the VW flip ones custom to other ppls fcc ID#. Not sure if that is true for all of our trucks. If you get me your fcc ID, I can send him a message for you or try to hunt you one down that would work for the 3rd gens.
