Project plan expedition trailor

I wasn't haven any luck in the search but maybe someone can give me the idea of the name or of what they are called. I thought there was a thread on here a few month back were someone built a trailor to house camping equipment etc. I was doing some CL searching and found this guy selling these trailers for cheap and plans to acquire one and build one to attach to my RIG.

Any help would be nice.

I've seen a company called Silver Eagle that sells those too. General purpose Military trailers. They do pop up on CL all the time. My buddy is getting one to hold a water tank at his hunting cabin.

This was for sale too. slightly different but rugged.

Ah So he actually builds them nice... These I found going for $800 and the guy keeps stock of them I'm pretty sure he get them from Bragg and Mackall in NC. There spec are out of this world as can tell. I think it would make a great platform to start from.

The only issue I see with those is they look like they weigh a million pounds. Even with my manual tranny I can't imagine trying to pull that monster.

Ditto. Pulling one of those M1101 or M1102 trailers off road safely would require a lot more truck than a 3rd gen. They weigh 1460 lbs empty. They are also almost 2' wider than a 3rd gen, and if the trails in Tennessee are anything like they are here in southwest Missouri (which I assume they are), there is no way you'll get a trailer that wide down forest service roads (I have to pull my mirrors in on some trails).

As thardy says, simple, light, and small are the way to go. Having pulled my trailer loaded, I'd say anything over about 1200 lbs loaded would be a real challenge off road for a 3rd gen.

Yea 1400 lb is a bit much and a little over kill. Trails in TN are pretty rough in places def steep tons of large rocks

That's a 1-1/2 ton military trailer, and it weighs in at 2650lbs!

I don't think they weigh that much. In fact I'm sure of it. 1400 is the weight of the trailer with all issued road gear which includes rarp, sides, chocks, and leveling legs (for keeping a load while the trailer is unhitched. That stuff weighs about 200-300lbs. Even with that stuff in there I can lift and drag that trailer by myself. A bare trailer is really easy.

Plus you can skim another couple hundred off that carcass if you go about it carefullly. The rims and tires weigh around 150 apiece plus a spring pack that can be slimmed down as those are 1 1/4 ton payload trailers. You could reconstruct those spring packs and drop another 50 - 75 lbs off the trailer. The body itself is quite light.

It is quite a bit wider than the 4runner so there isn't any denying that. I would recommend that trailer for a camper type build but not something you drag up the trail behind you.

They are incredibly stable offroad and pretty comfy to sleep in as is. With some creativity you could have quite a trailer. I have 11 or so years of messing around with these things.

My personal favorite trailer to build into a camper though would be a m353 generator trailer lol. It weighs too much but I will likely copy a lighter duty frame. The design just makes too much sense.

Just promise me one thing. Don't grind, weld, hammer, or anything that will mess with the paint without first researching CARC paint and what level of PPE you need. This stuff is very very hazardous to your health. It isn't like the warning to wear safety glasses when cutting paper with scissors.

With that being said I wish I could get all of my armor painted with CARC after I get done building everything. It is excellent bombproof paint. It takes a lot to scratch through it and it flexes with dents very well.
