Prop shaft greasing

This thread originated in 2012. It is hard to believe it we have not figured out how to grease a driveshaft after 9 years.

Ha! The dealerships can’t figure it out either. That’s why they don’t even do it.

BTW, it’s clearly stated in your user manual. Here’s what mine says, lithium base chassis grease NLGI No. 2.

Is that a newer owner’s manual? Mine is slightly different.
“...or multipurpose grease.”

Your 2010 mentions lithium/moly, lithium chassis, lithium multipurpose. Some confusion since MP is usually used to grease the chassis. An interchangeable term.

Mine is a 2018 model. Maybe they made an attempt to clarify the wording.

Here’s how I understand it. Multipurpose grease is generally a calcium sulfonate base, used to grease chassis components. Some MP grease is a lithium base instead, which Toyota wants you to use. The moly additive is generally recommended for sliding surface applications, like the slide yoke. Apparently it’s not really that critical, since Toyota adds that you can instead use lithium base MP (chassis) grease.

Just grease that damn thing, LOL!

So I just did this for the first time yesterday. Bought 2 new guns, both Li/Moly grease! Yes I am a little OCD.

I ran into trouble getting the gun onto the zerk on the front shaft under the heat shield. Couldn't get it to attach due to tight fit. Made a mess but I guess that is par for the course.

Any Tips???

I ordered one of those "easy" couplers and we will see if that helps?

Just rotate the front prop shaft by hand to position the zirk and use a flexible hose (unless you have a limited with full-time 4wd). You can also remove the heat shield if u want but I’ve never needed to. I don’t have a fancy coupler so I just hold it on the zirk with one hand and pump with the other.

Going to do single pump since id rather be consistent with doing this more often than not.

or just whatever.
my brain hurts. make a recommendation and im going to store to get one less clunk going on.

Just got my 4runner, adding this to the list. Big list of maintenance.. Now I know why they last a long time..
Simple but effective maintenance needed.
