Propeller Shaft Greasing V8 4WD 2004

I know we already have a thread related to propeller shaft greasing but I would like to ask for your opinion. I have a V8 4WD 2004 4Runner and I would like to have its properller shaft greased. I don't have any tools and I have to buy it first before I could "DIY" . So that leaves me to the option of having it done in the dealership. However, how would I know if they really did the job that I was asking? Can I verify it myself after they did it? Same goes with differential fluid. How would I know if they really did drained and replaced and fill it up with the correct amount and type of fluid?

By "propeller shaft" do you mean driveshafts? It isn't that easy to tell that they've been greased. If you get under the truck, you can look at all 6 driveshaft zercs (though you may have to move the truck back and forth a couple times so that they are pointing downwards). You should be able to see that the zercs themselves have been wiped down, and you may see evidence of a bit of new grease pushed out of the spiders. But you won't know that they put enough in -- as that's a judgment made by watching and listening as you pump the grease.

Also, it's not a big job to have the driveshafts greased, so it isn't a big deal if they didn't do it -- just have it done.

- Greasing the driveshafts doesn't require any tools. you buy a grease gun for a few bucks and some grease thats it. It's a very simple and easy procedure.

-There is no way of telling if the differential fluids have been done, I would just do it for piece of mind, can't hurt anything. It's not that hard of a process, if you can change your on oil you can easily do this.

If you don't plan on doing the differential fluid and transfer fluids yourself then I would just have the dealer grease the driveshafts.

Whenever you change the oil grease the driveshaft. My mechanic never charges more for this.

The dealership that i have been going to dont do driveshaft greasing. Its pretty weird. I guess i really have to do the greasing my self

By the way, I also asked about their differential fluid replacement and qouted me 130 dollars. Is that expensive for the job?

That would be a long ride. I haven't been back to MN since a 10 day canoe trip in the Boundary Waters in the mid '80s. Lovely place, but way too cold for me in the winter.

I'm not so skinny anymore, so I find ramps to be very helpful. You will need to move the truck back and forth until the zercs are pointing downwards (unless you have a V6 and can put it in 2WD and jack up the rear axle).

I just finished greasing my shafts. I don't feel that tiny "clunk" and "thud" anymore. Seems like my truck's shafts hasn't been greased ever since but the previous owner said he didn't do anykind of offroading and towing so I should be okay right?.

Anyway, it feels so great after I applied that grease over there (no pun intended)

Hello everyone,
the clunk and thump on my 4runner went back again after a year so I planned on having it greased by the dealership last weekend. I think they did a great job as the annoying clunk and thump went gone again. I just didn't bother to DIY it as I don't have a place anymore (I live on an apartment).

By the way, I have to show them this forum and where the zerks are located! Looks like the service advisor doesn't have any idea! hahaha

Anyway, my question is:
Do you hear of any recall from Toyota that could permanently fix this problem? I don't mind greasing it from time to time but how about those people who didn't know how to maintain their 4R? Just a thought. Thanks!

Nope. There's a recall on the Lexus version of the 4Runner for this exact problem but for some reason they don't think us Toyota owners are worthy. I still say DIY even if you have an apartment. A grease gun takes up no space and is much cheaper than paying someone else to do it.

Thanks Jimithing for the info. I will probably do it again next time. It just that when I asked about this to the service advisor (surprisingly she doesn't know anything about it) she said that they could do it for free. I just showed them where the zerks are, hopefully they did really put greases in their but so far everything is back to normal so I think they did it.
