Wow, I have read a gazillion pages on the best/proper grease for the 3rd gen 4runner driveshaft/slipyoke/etc....mine is a 2000...there seems to be all kinds of confusion surrounding the subject, even saw somewhere that the 2000 could use but one type of grease unlike it's predecessors....Anyway, hoping I can get some thoughts that might help me decide what grease to use where, as I would like to get this done tonight.

Red N Tacky, Lucas oil. Works great. Anything like marine grease will work, something that displaces water and dirt. its grease nothing special, you wont mess anything up by buying something like Red N Tacky and using that. I use it on every joint that requires grease on my truck. Works great.

I recently switched to lucas Ex-tra Heavy Duty:
X-TRA Heavy Duty Grease
I have no long term data other than it is a good poly-urea grease. And ANY grease applied often is better than grease applied every 100K miles.
I lube the chassis every 2nd oil change, or right after going offroad - being in a lot of dirt, water or nastyness.
Used mobile 1 red for years - no problems either. Again, the key is to lube her up often

It's less about what grease you use and more about if/when it's greased. Especially if you off-road or get the drive train wet consistently.
Go to your local auto parts store and just pick up some. I use moly grease on my driveline and works great. Better than NO grease like how it was when I bought it.

Any NIGL 2 should work fine. I like my Mobil XHP222 special.

I read through all the stuff out there too, until I got tired of trying to figure out which zerk needs what type of grease, on which day of the week. I just got a good, MP grease and I use it all around. Basically, grease each zerk with every oil change, for me.
This is what I got: Royal Purple 01312 NLGI No. 2 High Performance Multi-Purpose Synthetic Ultra Performance Grease

There is no confusion: In my year, for example, the Toyota FSM says use Molybdenum Disulfide grease on the slip yoke, and non-moly on everything else.
However, it has been shown by many, many users over the years(30 years, or so) that any NLGI #2 grease can be used in any of the zerks and there is no long-term difference.
You can follow the book, or do what everyone else is doing.
I use the Moly grease in all the zerks.

I've been using Valvoline multipurpose grease for about a year with no issues. However, in an attempt to stop the rear slip yoke from clunking again every 4-5 thousand miles, I went and bought some Valvoline Durablend Sythetic blend grease that is supposed to be fortified with moly. I'll give it a try and see if it works better on the slip yoke since they should have moly anyways.
As for the u-joints...I'm not going to worry about the moly making the bearings slide instead roll. If they get flat spots and need to be replaced....so be it. After 379 thousand miles — if they need to be replaced, I'm cool with it.
