Pros / Cons of 4th Gen. What year to buy?

I currently own a 99 Limited with 165k miles. I purchased it back about 5 years ago with 106K miles. I was very specific in what I wanted... silver, limited and the rear locking differential. I have really enjoyed it and plan to keep it until it becomes a money pit. I found out some bad news today that my other vehicle (99 Ford Expedition has a blown head gasket. This is my wifes daily driver. I have to make some quick decisions as to whether spend the money on the Expeditoin or cutting my losses and buying something else. I have been looking at an 04 4runner limited 4x4 v8 with a little over 100K miles. Not being familiar with the v8 / v6 option what do you guys think as far as reliability and longevity of the two motors? We don't really do any hauling other than a standard size utility trailer. I have read a few post about the v8's having some really expensive emission problems and I was also curious how the all aluminum v6's were holding up. I would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. Were there any issues with the 03, 04 or 05 model years? Any changes for the later years that make them more desireable?

Thanks.

The V8 vs. V6 debate has been talked about at length on here so you'll find lots of information. The V8 has an iron block and therefore thought to have better longevity than the aluminium V6. Time will tell, but really I'd say both are bullet-proof motors and there are countless examples of both motors lasting an extremely long time with proper care and maintenance.

I think a lot of people prefer the V8 because the gas mileage is so negligible that we figure, why not have the extra horse power and torque.

The 05+ V8 have the variable valve timed engine which give it an additional 30hp.

The only 'common' issues are the exhaust manifolds on the v8's are spotty and expensive to fix. I'd say most V8 owners won't have this problem but it;s something to be aware of. The brakes on all model's aren't great and you may experience a seized calipers. The actuators are another common problem but still not something I'd call common.

If it were me and I were in your shoes, hell no would I buy another Ford. Look for a 05+ V8 but settle for any V8 as I've found these vehicles are hard to source in the used market (at least in my area.)

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Another thing to look out for with the 04 you are looking at. 100k miles is right around when the vehicle require a major service of the timing belt, water pump, and pulley's. This maintenance will set you back $700-$1200 if it hasn't been completed so use that in your negotiations.

You answered my next question...if the v8's had a timing belt like the v6's do. I'm familiar with the expense on timing belts & water pumps. Thanks for the info!!

The 03's had the gray plastic cladding on them, some like it, some don't. I had an 03 sport and never really minded the cladding, but I also liked the look of the painted bumpers and fenders better.

In my opinion, the 06-09 are the best IMO, they have the projector headlights and look a bit sleeker

The V6 in the 4th gen has a timing chain and requires no service. V6 is great if you don't plan on towing, I love mine. 06 was the mid year refresh so you'll find projector headlights, LED tails and a few other nice little changes on the 06-09's.

The V8 has a belt
The V6 has a chain

V8 full time AWD, or 4x4, can't go rear wheel drive only
V6 selectable AWD, 4x4 or rear wheel drive

No rear locker option like on your 3rd Gen. But ATRAC works great in all daily driving situations for snow and ice.

The V8 does have the exhaust manifold cracking issue, which makes the truck louder but we seem to have found an inexpensive alternative in the Pacesetter brand...but only for the 2003-2004

The V6 is deficient of 2 Cylinders
Most of the guys I offroad with have V6 4.0L and no engine problems so far, for sure none related to normal driving. The FJ Cruiser pulley bearings usually start to squeal and die after crossing muddy water and getting very wet. Can't say if the 4Runner V6 4.0L pulleys would behave the same. Maybe search the forum for that problem. But when was the last time your wife took the Ford on a water crossing in her daily drive?

They also experience some over heating issues on the trail on really hot days.

I think both have transmission coolers

Gas consumption is not that different if you don't floor it. But if you do floor it, the V8 smells of rotten eggs :barf:But it's still not a yaris.
I can't think of any other engine drive train differences. I have the V8, but I'm pretty sure for what I do with it I would equally like the V6.

I also have an 04 4runner V8, one thing Id suggest, it to take it out and test the 4L make sure that it will go into 4L easily. if not the 4x4 shift actuator could be going out, and thats a VERY spendy fix, ask me how I know lol
Other than that, I absolutly LOVE the power of the V8 over my old 99 3.4L

IMHO. The sweet spot is a 2006, where it's new enough to get all the important features but not too newer where it will cost you more money

Ideally, i would say a 2009 is the best but then you end up paying more.

This is just my opinion.

V6s don't come with transmission coolers like the V8s. And I can say about 4 guys with V6s had squealing belts after the last off roading trip involving lots of muddy water crossings. I always said you shouldn't use the V8 for anything the V6 can't handle. The V8 just makes it easier. But obviously there are some guys that still tow 7000lbs with their V8s.

No rear locker option like on your 3rd Gen.

Not quite true, the 09 Trail Edition, though rare, came with both a rear locker and selectable ATRAC; not to be confused with the non-selectable ATRAC found on all 4runners. It is basically a FJ in T4R body. Im biased of course...

Very true. I got caught. But i'm going to wash myself of this oversight by saying he's looking at older ones. And I check the used 4runners section of local toyota dealers for one of these mystical 4th gen TE and never find one, so I keep on trucking my old 4th gen.

I have an 04 sr5 v6. as far as the drivetrain goes, the 8 year old v6 with 105,000 on the clock has never let me down. fully loaded rear with a totally full thule on the roof and it didnt feel any different than empty. cant go wrong with the v6 or v8 though

I enjoy the 03 I have for these reasons. The Grey cladding takes parking lot bumps and dings and doesn't show the damage. The transmission has a dipstick and is easy serviceable (04+ got "sealed" trannys with no dip stick). The grill is color matched to the body (I hate chrome, so you have to get the limited models to get color matched grills in any other year). Its old enough to be very affordable and still have the feel of a newer truck.

Issues to look for in older models-
Transfer case leaks around the actuator.
Seized brake calipers.
Cracked exhaust manifold on V8 ( I have this and can only hear it in reverse and for 1> min on cold start ups.)
Stock/JBL headunits get tired and fail to load CDs.

Great advice, put a couple things awry.. you can get the color matched grill on any model as a dealer option, and if you only hear your "cracked manifold" in reverse, then man that's not a cracked manifold your hearing.

My previous truck was also a '99 Limited, but I didn't have the locking rear differential on mine. With that being said, the thing felt like a tank when it was in 4WD. Unfortunately, my old truck met an untimely demise when I got broadsided by someone running a red light in Boston, hence the move to a 4th generation.

RIP

About 18 months ago I picked up a 2006 Limited with the V6 and I'm still completely in love with it. It starts easily, idles smoothly, shifts well, gets so-so gas mileage (19-21.5 average), has no squeaks or rattles, looks great, and has all the creature comforts I could ask for, i.e. heated seats, power everything, leather, sun/moonroof. I installed an aftermarket head unit so I have Sirius/XM and full Bluetooth connectivity for both phone and music streaming.

I bought it with 73,000 miles on the odometer even though the CarFax showed an accident in its history. I randomly selected a Toyota dealership near where it was for sale and had them do a full-blown inspection and they told me I had nothing to worry about regarding the accident, that it was fixed properly. I've now got 103,000 and it's running like a top.

I'm partial to the '06-'09 model years because that's what I've got, but I do like the projector headlights, the LED taillights, and the general aesthetic of those years. That said, I don't think you can go wrong with the 4th generation.

In addition to the issues listed above regarding seized calipers, transfer case actuators, etc, with the V6 I'd have them pull the #6 spark plug out for you so you can inspect the threads and see if there's any evidence of oil contamination before you purchase one. There's strong evidence at this point that the 1GR-FE engine has a problem with the head warping if it overheats, and possibly even when it doesn't, so make sure everything's ship shape in advance. Otherwise, it's an awesome rig.

As far as maintenance goes I've replaced the spark plugs, just replaced the rotors and pads up front last week (no seized calipers here), keep Mobil 1 in the crankcase, differentials, and transfer case, and flushed and changed my coolant last summer. Next on my list is change my brake fluid and throw a new serpentine belt on it, but otherwise everything seems to be good on it. I've had two check engine lights since I got it, but both times it was caused by my failure to fully tighten the gas cap which resulted in evap codes being thrown. Fixed itself both times once the cap was tightened.

I know this is TL;DR, but it's a great truck and I endorse it fully. Plus, this forum probably has a DIY write-up for anything you'd ever want to do mechanically or mod-wise, so your'e in good hands here. Good luck, go 4Runner.

I really appreciate all of your input. What is the normal maintenance interval on the 04+ "sealed" trannys? I don't always do my own oil changes and transmission services (I do when I have the time), but would like to be able to vs having to take it to the dealership.

I reviewed a link that someone posted that showed their is a size difference in the 3rd gens and 4th gens. For you guys that have owned both generations...can you tell a noticeable difference in the interior room? I can haul my entire family in my 99', but I get a lot of complaining about their not being enough room in the backseat.. :).

I also read somewhere that the v8's require premium fuel?
