PSA: Wheel Speed Sensors

Just thought I'd share some valuable info I found that would save people some $$$. So I've had my ABS light on for awhile and it threw about 4 random codes I have yet to be able to connect, but one of them was for a faulty driver side wheel speed sensor. Well a friend of mine had the same problem come up on his 4runner, just the passenger side wheel speed sensor and 4 random codes that were not the same as mine. He was able to take his wheel speed sensor out and clean it and the codes went away. When I attempted to take my wheel speed sensor out, I broke it. I went to autozone and they wanted $200 plus tax for one. I came home cause I figured I could save a little money finding one online and I found some great deals on wheel speed sensor for our rigs at around $15 each. Yes $15. I decided to order one because reviews on amazon said they worked and figured it wouldn't hurt to try and it would save me a lot of money if it worked. I plan on putting it in this weekend and will update if it works and solves my problem. I have linked some below and hope this saves some other people some $$$!

Nice! I've been driving around for a year with a broken sensor. Doesn't bother me, but it does come in handy for winter driving and for when wheeling and getting a tire up so the atrac can work. lol
The excess codes are the system self check and it knows there is an issue so it flags all those things. Replace the sensor and reset, all will go away.

Hey, I know this is old, but did the speed sensor work for you? I'm in the same boat and would prefer not to shell out $200 if I don't have to. Thanks!

FYI, I did the el-cheapo sensor and it lasted about 2 months. Then one day while braking at traffic lights it decided that I didn't really need to stop and it told the brake ECU to throw a hissy fit. I got lucky and managed to stop in the empty on-coming lane using the e-brake.

I STRONGLY recommend you get the OE Toyota sensor.

Could a broken wheel speed sensor really cause that much of a dangerous situation? Wouldn't it just disable ABS but still allow for normal braking?

I'm dealing with a similar situation now and just put in an Amazon sensor and wasn't too worried about it... until now.

I guess it depends on exactly what the problem is. If the sensor just stops working, then ABS/TRAC/VSC will become disabled. In my case, the sensor was still functioning to some degree, but producing erroneous signals for the computer to process. It basically activated ABS on that wheel for no reason, resulting in the brakes trying to pulse and preventing further pedal pressure to the other wheels. When I removed the cheap sensor, the issue went away.

Also, I bought the cheap sensor from Rockauto, and the new OE sensor on ebay for $139.

Sorry for such the late reply. I've been pretty busy here lately and haven't been on here in a while, but the wheel speed sensors I bought are working and have been for the past 2.5 years
