Pulling Front Pinion Bearing From Pinion Shaft?

Have removed the rear differential carrier and have it on the bench. Removed the pinion nut, oil seal & oil slinger. Can't figure out how to get the front bearing off the the pinion shaft. I have the FSM reference and looked at the SST required - don't want to buy that for $400. Can someone tell me how to get this bearing off without the SST? Have slide hammer w/ attachments and would be willing to buy generic puller (OTC, etc) if I knew it would work. Suggestions?

You could try with a bearing splitter, but it had better be a good quality one like OTC or SnapOn. It's best to use these in conjunction with a hydraulic press.

There are a number of clamshell bearing pullers out there for between $250 and $300. I've seen them several times in threads on the tools forums on Pirate4x4.

Thanks for the response but I don't think I was clear. I don't have the pinion out of the assembly. I think the bearing knife/press or clamshell is what I would need to remove the rear bearing once I get the pinion out (which I am hoping not to have to do). I am trying to replace the front bearing without taking off the bearing caps and removing the ring gear and pinion. I was hoping to do that and not have to install new shims and reset the backlash. I am intending to replace the crush sleeve, pinion nut and oil seal along with the bearing.

So - I need to remove the front bearing off of the shaft which, per the FSM, takes a puller (SST 09556-22010). I did try to lightly hammer the end of the pinion shaft back towards the ring gear thinking that it might release the preload and begin to move the bearing without success.

For what it's worth OTC, and their parent company was the US SST supplier to Toyota for many years. I worked for Snap on in the 90's and the OTC rep had a desk right inside TTT(Toyota Technical Training) in Torrance, CA. That said, that puller looks rather specialized. I'm sure it's a modified version of a standard 2 jaw puller, but I can't really tell how small or narrow it needs to be. Sounds like a tough one without the right tools.

Removing the ring gear/carrier to get to the pinion doesn't require new shims or re-setting the backlash or even checking the pattern. Put it all back together exactly as it came apart is all that it requires.
