purpose of readout over middle dome light

I have an 03 Runner and have owned it for two years. I was cleaning it this weekend and saw a small what looks to be a some sort of electronic information type read out screen just above the dome light I would say 1/2 inch by 3 inches or so and looks factory. Sorry I dont have pics of it as the car is still 350 miles away. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

in the back seat ??? Yep, that means you have a rear entertainment system back there. Your rig SHOULD'VE come with 2 wireless headphones and a remote control......................kinda cool, isn't (even though you may never use it)!, hahaha..................This system allows back seat passengers to listen to the radio or whatever (opposite) of whatever the driver is listening to. I have one in my 05 Limited, but have yet to even turn it on (I've had mine since March of this year).

Yep I had this in my 04 Limited never used it but cool. I have an 08 limited now and they do not offer this option anymore probably because of lack of use.

So I assume you need the remote to turn it on? I guess the dealer would be the only place to get that stuff? I dont know that I would ever use it. It is kinda cool always finding new things my rig can do though.

Yep, you need it to turn it on. Of course, you will need the wireless headsets to listen to anything. The remote looks like this:

I'm pretty sure wireless IR headphones are standardized so you're not locked into the dealer if you want to pick them up.

To Cookie's "SHOULD'VE" comment...as was mentioned in another recent thread when someone discovered the rear seat display, at least for 2003 models, the headphones were *not* included with the Rear Seat Audio package that came standard with Limited trim and was optional on SR5/Sport...the headphones were extra. The 2003 brochure even words the feature description in several places as "...with wireless headphone capability". I agree, it doesn't make sense, but that's the way Toyota delivered them.

If you want it, it's your, bro. I just got my 4R maybe a month ago and the headphones are still bubble-wrapped (not sure if they're original to the car or not). PM me your addy and I'll just give them to you, man. I updated my radio and am not even sure if they'll work in my car anymore. And even if it does, I have yet another set I can steal from my wife's 4R. :banana:

My bad, I learned that they were optional.........very strange......anyway, the rear remote SHOULD come with the truck, but apparently he doesn't have it. (you won't miss it as you are more than likely never to use it)
