I like the smarty key feature. I got to experience it on the Lexus loaners my parents get and it was very convenient. I don't know if it is like this on all models, but the key will ony unlock he drivers door. Whenever I had passengers, I would have to hit the button to unlock their door. The only way the other three doors open is if you touch it and have the key in your pocket.

Our 2007 Camry keyless entry/push button start has the feature for the front seat passenger as well. The interior lights also come on as you approach the vehicle. My wife never really has to remove her key from her purse. The only issue is that she tends to leave her purse (and keys) in the car overnight in the garage. The fob is supposed to be removed from the vehicle when not in use to prevent fob battery drain.

If you press the lock and unlock button (hold for 3 sec) on the remote it will toggle between unlocking the driver's door and all the doors, every time you do this (on Lexus vehicles).

Koz, you come back and I am learning new things! Is there a way to open the windows by holding the unlock button on the smart key? I know you wouldn't be able to close them through the keyfob because there is no place to insert the key into the door!

If you hold the unlock button for three sec, all the windows and sunroof open.

There is a key in the remote (in case the batt goes dead). You can flip the little cover up on the door handle and use it to close all the windows. Everywhere except the US you can simply hold the lock button on the remote for three sec to close the windows.

On the other subject , thats stuff is to high tech for me , its cool , but kind of useless of my taste. The key fob and the power seats work just fine for me.

Actually, Push Button Start is really an old technology. They had this back in the 1960's and 70's. You had to put the key in the ignition, then push a button on the dash to start the engine. So really Toyota isn't going backwards they are innovators, Nissan is outdated LOL! But seriously I am sure that if anyone is up to date with technology it is Toyota! I have actually heard whispers of fingerprint Identification Ignitions coming soon on Toyota's, but probably not for a few more years and most likely they will only be on the Land Cruiser in the beginning!!!

Figerprint Identification? Sounds cool but what if someone else is going to drive your car? Hate to be the debby downer but dont think that will happen.

Gents, let me tell you about the Smart Key in the new Lexus. When you approach the car the interior and puddle lights come automatically (several feet away!). When you touch the door handle the driver's and/or passenger's door/s open, the steering wheel and seats revert to your personal settings automatically. These settings are individual for each Smart Key, so when the little women (5'3") used the car last, I don't have to move the steering and seats out of the way before I (6'1") get in. No more fumbling around with keys at all, even the trunk! Once you use this set-up a while you get really spoiled FAST! The only problem is I now walk up to the 4Runner and touch the door handle expecting it to open. Talk about looking stupid!

I remember playing with Mercedes when they started doing this in like '03, its a pretty cool feature, but it bothers me...

Don't get me wrong the convenience is awesome, but its also the same reason why I didn't like driving my Dad's '04 CLK55 AMG. It was a great car, fast as hell and sounded just as mean. But doing 80+ on the freeway feels like your cruising at 20mph in town. I just hate how the more modern cars get the less and less we get to really "Drive" a car or truck. I miss the joy of my 1982 RX7, when you were going fast in that car you felt it. There's a certain level of driver/vehicle communication that's just being lost on these newer vehicles. :moping:

Another cornball feature is those combination pads that some Fords and Mercurys have. Funny that Nissan didn't reinvent the wheel again (late 80's Maximas had it). I saw this woman in the parking lot fiddle with the pad for a good two minutes trying to unlock her SUV. A friend of mine who had a Ford with it, said the combination is printed on the trunklid lip.

This a feature that I actually don't mind. For a long time my Dad's Ford was the only tow vehicle in the family. This feature was great when going out on the waverunner. Just lock the keys inside the car and never had to worry about losing them on the lake or getting the fob wet. The original code may be printed on the trunk lid, but you can program the code to anything you want, birthday, anniversy, etc.

Toyota's smartkey system should be on every vehicle in the world. its simply one of those small things you think is dumb until you own it. Then you realize how good it is to have it.

Remember this thread is about 4 years old so some of the posts are a bit outdated since the technology has matured since then so the bagging is on the old tech when push button starters were a new thing.
