Q: Non-Rebuildable Coilovers & Shocks: Is still OME the best option?

Good evening folks !

Please do not burn me on flames... I know there is a FAQ suspension section, I know there have been many threads similar ....yet, after all these years with the 5th Gen among us, I would like to ask if the OME are still the best option. Please share your specs and own experiences. I would like to install a new suspension in my Mag Grey Trail w/o KDSS. I remember OME were the best... Not sure if that still is the case.

I am currently running the full OME kit. It's all medium all the way around. The front lifted 2.5 and the back I believe 1.5. I'm also running Spidertrax spacers and 285 BFG A/Ts. The ride is stiff but not annoying. I took a road trip from Las Vegas to San Francisco to Sparks and back to Vegas. No issues at all. I don't have UCAs installed yet but I have a set of Camburgs on the work bench. I'm adding C4 sliders and a Gobi rack so I feel like the ride will only improve and be just about right.

From what I have read OME is a great set it and forget it product but not going to ride like a caddy or have the adjustments of true coil overs. I wanted to keep it KISS. I've only been off-road once and it was great. (I'm used to my Jeep so it was luxurious to me. I wouldn't volunteer to be a pre-runner but it does just fine. I will say the technology is a bit prehistoric compared to today's standards but I don't need all the bells and whistles.

Depends what you are looking for.

For me and my 17 TRDORP, the ome kit is to stiff. Ride is all subjective, but I don't equate a crazy firm ride with a good ride. I also run empty most of the time.

For me the Bilstein 6112/5160 with soft OME spring n the rear will do exactly what I'm looking for. The ride will be still plush-ish and it can always swap out the rear springs if I increase my normal load level. I'm doing UCA with the install.

Check out Dobinsons. They seem to have a ton of spring options front and back.

They use a similar style strut/shock as OME.

Best, is very subjective.

I would say OME is the most proven, fire and forget over landing style suspension option you can go with. They are sort of indestructible and very proven. I've never seen a failure.

However, there are other options in the same class that may offer better ride and similar durability. Dobinson, Ironman are options I would consider. They come from the same Aussie roots. I've heard good things about the Ironman foam cell stuff.. Not very popular here.. but friend has it and says it is great... Dobinson also looks good with plenty of travel...

Bilstein is another option that seems to work well for many people. I would personally go with one of the Aussie setups, but they clearly get the job done.

I just got my Dobinson's kit in last week. Won't be installing it until August though (the wait is killing me). I'm going to start a build thread after I get them installed with a little write up on them. I know they're new to the US market and not a lot of people have them on their trucks yet.

I should have mentioned that all I am planning to do in the near future is a rack (Gobi or Baja, not yet sure) and sliders (most likely shrockworks as they are based here and would like to support them). Currently I am running BFG KO2 275-70 load E on stock wheels.

What do you guys say...? Which one should I get? I know, just opinions but that is why I said this is a Question, I would like to hear your experiences. I am more on the plush and soft ride of things btw... Even though the load E are a bit stiff though. ;-).

If you want plush I would not get OME. They aren't uncomfortable but they are pretty stiff. Which has some advantages. If you plan on adding weight later on such as bumpers, drawers, winches then it will be okay. However for an empty ride I think you'll notice dips and bumps more. Off-roading however they are excellent and definitely an upgrade over stock. As others have mentioned, they're pretty much bullet proof.

I would look at Dobinsons. It seems they are valved softer and they have many different coil options which are softer than what OME offers. OME's softest rear spring is 260lb (44% stiffer than stock) which for me right now rides stiff but I plan to add either a drawer or sleeping platform soon.

I decided against Bilsteins for a few reasons. It seemed like they are a good replacement for stock shocks and applications but it seems there have been more failures and leaks with the Bilsteins than compared to OME. I guess it depends on what type of off-roading you plan to do. I just wanted something that was dead solid reliable with the least maintenance and OME was the ticket for me.

If I were to do it again I'd probably go Dobinsons just for the softer spring rates.
