Great write up.

Can anyone who did this mod give an update on the longevity / how it's worked out over time? Have any issues sprung up or is the charger still performing as you intended it to?

The little white plastic for the LED light fit just great after a little dremel work.

There is not much too it. The parts are installed so I'm not going to remove them to take more pictures but this should help you.
This was done two years ago so I don't remember all the details.
Today I would use a rapid charger but phones today are too large to fit in the opening anyway.

Second, I am not too comfortable with soldering for the 12V power source. Does anyone know of another 12V source behind the dash I can simply tap?

You can do a similar mod. and hide your charging cable behind the dash.

I run my iPod in my 4Runner, and I just pulled the cubby, drilled a hole in the back and on the left side, and used grommets to make it look clean, and ran my USB around the back of the cubby.
Now the usb cable doesn't get all bent and frayed from being bent over in the cubby. I can also put my iPhone in there if I decided to, and charge it. But I just put my iPhone my my 4wd lever and charge it from the usb port in the console.

The safest way would to bring in a pair of 12guage wires from the battery and install a small fuse block under the dash. Then you can add as many accessories as the fuse block (and 12guage wire) can handle.

That or wait until you have been looking at all the cool mods you want to do and go bigger.

There was mention about how some of the newer phones are too big to fit in the cubby OP put the wireless charger mod in. I am one of those people with a Samsung S9 that typically would fit but I put an otterbox case on it and now it won't fit.
I have recently discovered the tray behind the driver door handle that you could almost put a small tablet in! With a little hope, the backside of the flat space in the door panel could accommodate a wireless charger board. And then with the addition of some sort of retention (I'm thinking a piece of dense foam-flexible and spongy) to keep the phone vertically flat, it would work. I'm going to explore this as an option. I'll report my findings when I get around to it.

Awesome project. I’m in the middle of this, and as embarrassing as it is to type - I’m having a helluva time soldering the ground to the side of the lighter. Power? No problem, 5 seconds. But the ground is giving me fits.

Any advice?


Edit: Looks like someone else earlier in the thread had the same issue. I ended up looping the ground wire through the black plastic retainer - which maintained contact between the wire and lighter body. Taped it up and so far, so good.

I was thinking put some strips of Elmer’s glue to give a little tackiness to give a bit more grippy contact.
Maybe dots or strips on hot glue?

Does anyone find their phone sliding out of cubby while charging?

I typically keep my iPhone in the front cup holder and angled toward me. Any idea if there is a way to have the wireless charging circled around the underside of the cup holder, and switch activated to charge wireless while in the cup holder?

Switch would be the easy part - I'm just curious if there is a way to charge the phone without laying flat in the lower cubby like most others have done?

I don't think the curved cup holder will give enough contact area to make sufficient charging. Maybe you can make this a wireless charger.

None of the junk I have ever stored there slid out unless I was off-road, bouncing around while going up a fairly steep incline.

Since I have done this mod, it's no different now. The phone never slides out, it's actually angled down towards the front a little bit.

Any instructions on how to get the piece out to mount the charger and wire up the charger?

I don't really want to take out the entire console with the shifter out. Hoping I can take off the two pieces over the temp and fan knobs, then it can slide out.
